Duncan was almost nine. It is always hard to lose a pet but when it is tragic and sudden, it just seems that you never had that extra time for more memories.
Thx all for you thoughts.
I totally sympathize. My 2 year old cat had a sudden heart attack in my arms and it was awful. Give your other dog an extra tight hug and try to remember all the good times with Duncan.

Poor Maggie, we are certain she knows Duncan is not coming back. I have two dog baskets, one on each side of me, and when I am on the computer, usually Maggie is in one, Duncan is in the other. They get their treat, eat it, then settle down and sleep in their baskets for the rest of the evening.
Last night and tonight, Maggie does not want to stay down here. She is up in the kitchen, on the blankie she and Duncan shared together((

I'm so sorry to hear about Duncan, it's one of the reasons why I don't really want to live where cougars and the like can prowl easily. I'm going to hold out hope that he'll find his way back to you, hopefully he just got himself lost in the woods or something.
I don't have an uploaded recent pic of my two dogs, but here's one of when I just brought Juno home (she's the Doberman)
Loki is the Shiba Inu, Juno is about 4 months now and is bigger than her older brother already, we're all thinking she's going to be a huge pup (already over 30 lbs).
Sniff, sniff, sniff, our dog Duncan has met a tragic end. He was killed by a cougar yesterday afternoon.
My husband was checking the fence around our property, to see if any trees had come down on the fence with the big winds we have had lately. He had his quad and both dogs were with him as they normally are when he is out and about on our property.
He heard a wailing about 30 feet to his left, it stopped after a minute. He called the dogs, Maggie came and she went home when he told her to. Duncan never came. My husband took his axe but the willows were very thick and entangled at that point and he never felt safe with cougars out and about on our property.
He came home, got his gun, went out to look for Duncan. Never found a trace of him so the cougar must have lifted him and carried him off. He went out in the evening after supper and never found a trace either. Duncan never came home overnight so we are almost 100% certain he has met his demise with a cougar.
Duncan lived to retrieve and to hunt. Every night after supper, he parked himself 3 feet in front of my husband and stared and stared and stared until my husband relented and went out to play retrieve with him. What an enthusiastic dog, as my husband says "I will never have another dog as good as Duncan."
RIP Duncan.
I am so sorry.
My boss' dog just two weeks ago went into kidney failure, and things looked very grim. She spent the weekend at the vet, they gave her a ton of fluids, and she came through it okay. She's got to be on a special diet now, but she's the sweetest, prettiest Pomeranian you'll ever meet, so we're all glad she made it through.

That is a beautiful dog.
Ignore the crappy camera phone pictures, but here's my little fluffball, Kaner (yes, named after the cabbie abuser. Shhh.). Kaner was a rescue, from an Amish puppy mill somewhere in Ohio.
A few months ago, after his first grooming appointment that I took him to:
And now, after a much more extensive haircut, he doesn't really look like a Pomeranian, but I think he looks much cuter this way.
Sorry for the loss red. I really hate hearing stories like that. I'm just glad he brought you so much joy throughout his life. I posted a quote on the forums somewhere a couple of weeks ago, and I'll post it again as it fits I think. This isn't the exact quote, and I don't know the author:
"Every man should be so lucky to experience things that bring such happiness, that when they end, they bring such pain."

Nice looking dog. Seeing this picture reminds me of a song.....
There's a voice that keeps on calling me
Down the road, that's where I'll always be.
Every stop I make, I make a new friend,
Can't stay for long, just turn around and I'm gone again
Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down,
Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.
Down this road that never seems to end,
Where new adventure lies just around the bend.
So if you want to drive me for a while,
Just grab your hat, come travel light, that's hobo style.
Maybe tomorrow I'll want to settle down,
Until tomorrow, the whole world is my home.
So if you want to join me for a while,
Just grab your hat, come travel light, that's hobo style
Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down,
Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.
Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down,
Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.
There's a world that's waiting to unfold,
A brand new tale no-one has ever told.
We've journeyed far far and know it wont be long;
We're almost there, and we've paid our fare with our hobo song.
Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down,
Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.
So if you want to join me for a while,
Just grab your hat, come travel light, that's hobo style.
Maybe tomorrow, I'll find what I call home, Until tomorrow, you know I'm free

Sadly, no. Our dogs just never run off or go off our yard unless we go with them. We held out hope of course that he maybe got on the scent of something.......
but Duncan is always home for dinner.....
and last night he was not......and with the terrible wailing my husband heard, we don't have much left to hope for.

This post is for redforever, and anyone who has ever lost a pet.
Beau - Jimmy Stewart on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson
Thx MMF, I enjoyed that. Duncan was not an unruly chap as Jimmy's dog Beau was described, but he did have a similarity to Beau in that he had a fear.
While Jimmy's dog Beau was scared of the dark, Duncan was deathly afraid of thunder and could sense and feel a storm coming before we could see any lightning or hear any thunder. Here was a dog who trembled and hyperventilated when storms came through but was totally unfased by the sound of a shotgun.
And when those storms hit, he was such a little shadow, prancing circles around your feet and almost tripping you. He just had to be brought in the house and be reassured. He would settle down when in the house and I would tease him and say "You are just turning into an old hound dog aren't you? And you just want to be a soft old house dog"
And I think that as those summer storms come through in the future seasons, that is when I will remember Duncan the most.

My sister's golden lab was very lucky last year. He came home after being missing for a few hours with two claw marks on his legs and a big bite out of his rear end. They figure the cougar was a juvenile or he wouldn't have made it.
My Sister and I are hoping to get a maltipoo hopefully in the next couple months or next year sometime.
We are currently looking at a good breeding place near or in Calgary that sells these pups.
Anybody have any good breeding places they would like to share?

None of my beeswax but do the world a favour and look for a rescue first.
