Aside from that, though... Apple's 100% control-freak power grasp on their products and implementations actually works in the customer's favour with the iPhone - since every NA carrier applies their own locks and restrictions on every other cell phone.

Not on the iPhone though. This is one time I love Apple's "STFU and sell what we give you" approach to business.

And the phone profile in the ad doesn't even look like the iPhone!

So if I already have a phone plan with Rogers (which I do), can I just put that onto the iPhone?

I don't really care about a data plan, I'd just use the Wi-Fi anyways (not a business thing, just pleasure). I've been looking into an Ipod Touch a little bit but this would be a lot better, and it's cheaper too.

I think Apple will be lowering the price of their iPod Touch dramatically sometime before July 13.

it actually may not be cheaper if you already have a contract with rogers. something tells me it's gonna be 199$ with a three year contract so it would probably be alot more to buy outright.

The Hookup™: http://www.howardforums.com

(Best cell phone discussion board in the world, been going there for about 3 years now. In fact, right this very second there are 7526 people logged in. They had over 22000 people logged in at the same time last June. There are carrier insiders, high profile users, a bazillion tips for getting better plans, upcoming hardware leaks, etc etc etc.)

(In other words, lots of +info.)

(...and they have a thread on the iPhone in the Canadian Carriers - Rogers section. Albiet not much more info, but if there are any leaks on plans/pricing, chances are they will be posted there before they're posted anywhere else.)

(Parenthesis are win, btw.)

(Tip: Start at the end of that iPhone thread, not the begining. It was originally a "leaked info" and "rumours" thread and they just merged the "fact/announcement" thread with it. If you start at the begining, you'll have to sift through a hundred pages of crap to get to the relevant stuff at the end. I have no clue why they did that. I really wish they had the mods we have here. Anyway...)

I doubt it, the $199 price is subsidized by Rogers, Rogers has already said in a press release that it will be with a 3 year contract.

So for people already on a contract, they'll probably have a higher non-contract price to just purchase the handset, or they might do what AT&T has said they'll do and those getting a phone will just get a new contract that will overwrite the existing one.

Here's a link directly to the Rogers section of the website:
http://www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=49

Also, the iPhone thread is only 38 pages now. Once it was official, they removed most of the 100-ish speculation pages. Still somewhat of a gong show, with people guessing all over the place, but should provide somewhat of an idea of what Rogers will do.

That's true. Was the first gen iPhone for $599 also subsidized (by AT&T obviously)?

Nope, that was part of the problem with the first phone and why it didn't get picked up more around the world; phone too expensive and there was some kind of strange profit sharing setup that most carriers didn't want to go for.

So Rogers requires a 3-year contract, while AT&T requires two-years for the same price, and the British can get one for free.

This isn't really new news, the real question is whether or not they are going to allow people with current contracts to switch over.

Of course they'll let people on current contracts switch over.. if you've got 2 years left in your contract, you can get the iPhone for $199 and the 3 years gets tacked on the end for a total of 5 years
