The merger of "tent" and "tint" is a south-eastern US thing, not Canadian. If Evman says differently, then he's clearly lost any ability to distinguish vowels. If you want a great example of this merger, listen to some of the anchors on CNN. It's immediately obvious when they pronounce the name of their station as "See-In-In"

Sorry, tint and tent are definitely supposed to be different. That's one of the big ones. It's the same thing that results in Americans saying "git" instead of "get".

Collar/caller and hock/hawk are still Canadian mergers though.

Default For Eveman

Eveman, here are my choices below. By the way, I am a Maritimer. Born and rased in NS, moved to Toronto at 22, stayed until 28, and have lived back in NS for the last 2 years. - this quiz labeled me as a Western US'er

1If you say the word THOUGHT, does it rhyme with LOT?
Yes

2How do you usually say the words DON and DAWN? Do you say them the same or differently?
Same

3How would you say HOCK and HAWK?
Same

4What about COLLAR and CALLER?
Same

5When you say ON, does it rhyme with LAWN or with JOHN? Or both?
ON LAWN, and JOHN all rhyme with each other

6The three words MARY, MERRY, and MARRY. How do you say them?
I say all 3 the same

7What vowel sound do you use in the beginning of the word HORRIBLE?
I say HORRIBLE with the same O as in HORSE.

8The words TENT and TINT. How do you typically say them when you are typically talking?
Different

9Do you say the words HEEL and HILL alike or not?
Different

10Do you say words like BATH, PASS, and STAFF with the same vowel as BAT, PACK, and TRAP?
Same

11Do you say ABOUT and MOUTH with the same vowel sound as LOUD and DOWN?
Yes
****(I did struggle a bit with this one as I found "Mouth" for me is more "mOthe" than "mowth" - But when I say them all together, they sound the same to me....except for "loudmouth". But this question didn't give other options like some of them.)

12Do you say RIGHT and PRICE with the same vowel sound as RIDE and PRIZE?
Yes

13How do you say the first A in PASTA?
Same A as in MAT or CAT

14If you say BAG does it rhyme with VAGUE?
Yes

15You say "I," does it ever sound anything remotely like "ah"?
Sometimes with a few words

16How do you say the "oo" in ROOF?
Like the "oo" in FOOD

17If you say BOTHER does it rhyme with FATHER?
YES

11, 12 and 14 should be different. Definitely 11, especially for a maritimer, it shouldn't even be close.

12 and 14 are examples of Canadian raising. Vague rhymes with "beg" not "bag". Right starts with "ri" whereas ride starts with "rai". It's hard to explain but you definitely should be able to differentiate between the two when you say them aloud.

I sent this to an Australian friend and the quiz told him he had a Jersey accent. Maybe that's how Russell Crowe landed the role in American Gangster.
