I guess I should answer my own questions...
1) Male
2) I can ask around and usually fill up some male and female spots if required
3) I live in SW, and driving is NOT a problem
4) Yes obviously
5) As far as I know, any nights and weekends are good
6) Haven't really tried pitching, but can play anything just as long as if it is a fun league we switch around a lot.

6. Any position but first base (only played there once and got in the way of runners.) Have pitched tons, and willing to do so. Hopefully some outfielders come on board!

1) gender: dude
2) I might prefer night out with the boys - what happens at softball, stays at softball
3) SW preferred, but not essential
4) sure - may be able to get sponsor
5) other - weeknights preferred - speedy, decent arm/glove - not a good hitter (would like it if stats were not kept )
next Saturday could be ok (Sunday NFL - but could be free after early game is over 2 pm)

I could lean into a few pitches to get the free base.

1) gender: Male
2) will you have another player with you? Possible what gender? Female
3) what area of town do you live in, and is distance a deal-breaker? (if yes, maybe we can get a north team and a south team or something): I split my time between the SE (Deer Run) and the SW (Bankview, close to downton). Distance is a bit of an issue but as long as it's accessible by transit, I'd be fine.
4) are you willing to share the costs of joining the league? (this must be made clear upfront...I can't afford to float a whole team! we'll probably need bases, balls, bats, etc). Also beer: Yes
5) Weekends generally work better for me because I work until 7 p.m. during the week but if we could get times after 7 it wouldn't be an issue.

Bumpity bump bump...
Just got back from dodgeball. Hilariously fun even though our team sucked and the other team were cyborgs. I can't wait until slo-pitch season. These games are just so fun when everyone just takes it easy and is there to have a good time.
Keep posting, people. This is a rec league. It doesn't matter if you suck. As long as you can laugh at yourself, you'll have fun. If you REALLY suck, you can ride the pine and cheer the rest of us on. If you're really good, go join a serious league.

Its a lot more fun if you don't get drilled in the face the day before you were planning to get a passport photo taken. It is a lot of fun though.

sorry guys I have been busy with things for the last couple days- I would like someone to look into some leagues and let me know what they think. So far the consensus has been "south" and distance doesn't matter, so let's try to go as south-central as possible.
I will try to do some investigations this afternoon, but can you guys re-suggest any good leagues you may have been in or heard of?

I could call Softball Calgary and get a list of leagues / locations. However I know Shawnski was against using them, for one.
Could also contact NSA to see what they have to offer.
Other than that I think the smaller "beer" leagues may not be advertising in the paper yet, as they likely have not had their initial meetings yet.
If no one else has suggestions then I will proceed with the above.

Yeah, I'm a south guy as well. I'll contact some of my old team members and see if they have scattered into other leagues and if they can recommend any for us.
I used to play in the Peanuts Pub league many years ago. I think it still exists.

I'm in for the South on Sundays...
1) Male
2) No
3) SW and could drive as long as it's not deep North.
4) To some extent.
5) Sunday works for me.
6) Generally play in the Outfield but would play and suck equally anywhere needed in the in-field. Have pitched in very non-serious soft ball leagues in the past.
There is a league run out of Dixons pub. Not sure how serious it is or what it costs but it's South anyways.

Try calling Big League Sports. They run some NSA affiliated leagues. You can also call NSA or SPN head offices and ask for league information.
I have all our teams returning this year, so I don't have an opening in our league at this time.
Edit, oh! Don't forget ball this weekend!
Saturday at noon seems to be popular for many. Let's go with that one.

The CSSC runs softball and it sounds pretty ideal to me. $550 per team of 10 (3 girls 7 guys) so it's relatively cheap. They supply the bases for a $40 deposit and have a Sunday Recreation Plus league which sounds pretty good...
Quote:
Sunday Recreation Plus - For Recreational players but teams will pitch to their opponents as per ESSC Intermediate division rules. Good for novice players and teams who are mixed with experienced and recreational players.

I called NSA last week to find out about the sunday rec league. The chick that I apparently need to talk to is on vacation until early FEB. That makes me nervous.. But the person I spoke to promised she'd try to get in touch with the other woman and get my questions answered...
And now that I think about it, NSA was the league I was in before. I wasn't the organizer though, so I don't know anything other than it was pretty sweet to play doubleheaders (not the same team, usually) each sunday. Usually from ~2-4 to 5-7.
Oh, and I have another girl.

There was a NSA league at Optimist Sundays that played double headers, second game against a different team. That was a good league, didn't see too many "slopitch guys". Looked like fun to play in it.

Sweet, so they're all over the city. If it were at optimist (IIRC, that's on either crowchild south or sarcee south?) that'd help include the northies.
And yah, it was a fun league to play in. There were a couple of teams that were a little more serious than we were, but mostly just people that wanted to take it easy and have fun.

Optimist is off Sarcee, just south of 17th Ave. Good location. I played there a few times in the Goodtimes league in 2004.
