Line up 100 Americans, call them ignorant and then quickly count how many are quickly coming to the conclusion that you mean no negative connotation by that comment.
When you pull yourself off the floor with a bloody lip you might realize that the word "ignorant" and "compliment" rarely appear in the same phrase.

Not a problem. 51 will take issue with the comment and have to fight with the 49 who understand it. That leaves me with having to deal with 2 of them.

I laughed when people were posting 'Let's just get this election over with already so we can put this all behind us...' a few days ago.
Anyways, I have added nothing to this thread. Please continue...

Well they voted him in again so they deserve these next four years of Bush and I do not feel a tad sorry for them. Enjoy America.

Well if you can't beat them, join them. I bought 200 shares of Halliburton today.
I just hope terrorists know the difference between Canadians and Americans. As much as i dislike Toronto, i hope they don't get bombed.

I wonder if our American readers will be surprised to hear they are ...
are proud that they are "ignorant", "self absorbed" and focussed on "style".
That is just plain silly. 51% of a huge nation voted strongly for a party that some on this site don't like. That doesn't make this massive group of people any less intelligent than the other 48% that voted Kerry.
To think so makes one as ignorant as one reports Americans to be.
|
My comment has nothing to do with their election. Again your focussing on the negative connotations that "you" attach to them. Americans care about themselves. Period. They are offended when others say anything about them. They believe that they are always right and what others say has no bearing on them. That's the way they live and it works for them. The only time it runs into conflict is when they take this attitude out into the larger world.
Ignorant means that they only know and care about themselves. Same wth self absorbed. Maybe the focussed on style comment isn't totally fair, but they do appear to be wrapped up in appearing to be right (whatever that is) as opposed to actually being right.
None of this is a surprise to me given the country's slant to rugged individualism. Why should they care about anyone else. They are who they are. They ahve learned to live with it. So should we.

Who cares if americans interperate the word in whichever way. If I think many are ignorant of the issues, showing a number of how many voted for your man, has zero relevance. By many americans own admition, much of the victory was thanks to evangelical leaning people, whom Carl Rove specifically wanted to bring in to play. What are those sorts of people, but faith based? Ergo they voted on faith over fact.
I agree that Americans often spout off that they don't care what the rest of the world thinks. Heard it here....
So why care when they think that large sections lean toward being virtually ignorant of the facts (read bible belt).

I think estimates for the evangelical addition were around 4 million ... what about the other 50 plus million?
Both sides have ignorant voters, both sides have intelligent voters, both sides have many in between.
Bottom line ... you are cutting a generalized swath through the American electorate - a very dangerous way of grouping people. Most of that map is red when you look at it. A generalization from the other side could read that without snooty big city people that are out of touch with the realities of life Kerry won't have gotten a sniff in this election?
Is that comment fair? Not at all ... many Kerry voters have sound reason for voting they way they vote, so I wouldn't generalize them that way.

Why post something like that? Even if joking (and I don't see a smiley face attached) it's in poor taste.

Well, I just called four (that carry guns and are trained to lay a serious hurt on you) Americans ignorant and I'm still standing (tis but a flesh wound!). Of course I had to explain my comment and in what contect I was using the term (you guys are ignorant to anything that goes on in the world outside of our State), but once I did that they readily agreed with me. And these are people that pretty smart and I consider well above the norm. When not a single one of them could name the Mexican State directly south of here (three hours away) they quickly agreed with my statement.

Heh.
I think all this stuff is too funny. I probably hate Bush more than anyone here, but for some reason, I don't really care that he won. For me, it means for more years of listening to the comical ways his supporters try to defend him. It's reality television at it's best. I guess if I was an American, I wouldn't find it so funny, but as a Canadian, I think it's great.
Unless he does something stupid like nuke somebody, I'll gladly watch from the sidelines.

If Rudy Guiliani (sp?) runs in 2008, I could see him winning easily.
But it depends on who he is running against.
I would love to see Hillary vs Guiliani in '08.
That would be sweet

I'd rather wait and see what happens over the next 3 - 4 years before declaring a Republican victory. I have a feeling it'll be a wild ride. Maybe next time there will be a real reason for young people, young men in particular, to actually vote.

I'm still hoping the US amends the constitution with regards to having to be born in the USA, because then Arnold can run and fulfill the prophecy from the great action movie "Demolition Man"
While they are at it, get rid of the electoral vote system and just decide the presidency based on popular vote. And if everyone wants to feel included, then go ahead and close all precincts at the same time nationwide, say, 11 pm EST.

It doesn't NECESSARILY mean they are less intelligent, but it doesn't not mean it either. You'd need to have some way to test it.
This is probably a trivial example, and perhaps not even valid, but if we assume teh majority of people in the States like reality TV, and some don't, that doesn;t necessarily mean one group is more stupid than the other.
But it could.

As I'm sure you know, I wanted Kerry to be our next President and I'm sad today that it didn't come to fruition.
I don't like George Bush, and many of the people in his administration and party and to see these people get elected again makes me sick. But what can you do?
HOWEVER HERE'S WHATS SCARY-
Bush can now push ahead through the house and senate an extremely conservative agenda without caring about his numbers.
Bush must nominate I believe two Supreme Court Justices. With the balance of the Supreme Court conservative, we are going to a badly partisan Court and challenges to certain laws like Roe v. Wade and perhaps a further pursuit of the Gay Marriage issue.
The line between Church and State is going to wither away so fast its not even funny. We have a born again Christian as President. For any person in this world there is absolutely no problem being born again. But when you are President of the United States, a country that represents so many different views (religous), and you have stated that you consult with God or Jesus or whoever when you make decisions about the state of this country, the Line between Church and State? BYE BYE. And further, the decisions are going to be faith based. For many people thats a scary situation.
But what can I say? Bush won. Kerry Lost. The good to come out of this is that the Democrats have to look inside themselves and revamp that party. They have become weak, disjoined and their message is confused. They need to rally as one party as the Republicans have done.
And we need to find a good ol' southern democrat to get back the South cause we were a NO SHOW there.
I agree a sad day for myself.
