What do they look like? If they're ghost looking deals. You need an enchanted weapon to kill them.

Only enchanted weapons and silver weapons do damage but I already knew that.....

Doing some snooping around the forums it seems you can usually take them out frrom a distance with an enchanted bow. Unlike other beasts they aren't as prone to charge you until you are close even if you shoot them. I don't usually carry a bow so perhaps it's time I do.

The other method I saw was go into sneak mode deliver the 6x sneak attack, side step a little deliver another one etc.

Never seen one yet then. I've seen ghost looking things that I just sneak up on and destroy them.

Yeah Draug, your PC would work very well with a better video card. the 6600GT isn't even that bad, just not enough for this game (I had a 6600GT) until I got my 7900GT.
How much did you get the 7900GT for?
I am looking at geting an ATI X800 GTO for $220. Must have better graphics for Oblivion!

What characters are you guys making?

I tried doing a battlemage focusing on Destruction, Light Armor (probably should have done Heavy), but I barely had enough mana to sustain any sort of attack (Dark Elf).

So I changed, made a Wood Elf with Marksman, Light Armor, Blade (Almost exclusively use Marksman), Alchemy (Poisons are Amazing). I have Sneak, Acrobatics, Illusion as well.

My Archer character has a lot more power than my Mage, and can do Sneak attacks (x3 damage) from Ranged, and poisons work extremely well for tougher enemies. (Tailor made for the Dark Brotherhood missions).

Card probabley... I'm running a 9600 pro and I play with mostly everything turned down.. still have some lag.

Sadly to get a new video card I also need a new motherboard (I want PCI express).. and I'm not committing to the hassle that involves just now

Interesting to hear most people here are playing this game on the PC and are willing to spend the money to upgrade their PC video card vs buying an XBox 360.

Which is what I did. Even with a 52" Wide HDTV I'd rather play it with my new video card on a 17" monitor with a 8ms refresh rate.

So clear! Plus bug fixes with patches, mods... ect

Historically i've been a console gamer but that all changed when I got my new PC last Sept. PS2 and XBox have been dust collectors since. If $$$ permits i'd get a PS3 though.

I got the game running fine with my Radeon 9600. Sometimes its a little slow and all the grpahics setting have to be turned down. Its crashed a couple times. I am looking at getting a new video card just so I can max it out.

xbox 360 is a less powerful pc. Most games you can get on PC too. I use my graphics card for playing games and do 3D modeling and texturing with Maya. I would rather invest in my pc then a machine that only plays games.

Like Redman says the PC is just a much more powerful machine that does more than only play games. That said, I'll likely get a 360 eventually. I own all of the other consoles so it's just a matter of time!

I have to say I'm really happy with the performance of 7600GT video card. I had reservations since I really wanted the 7900 but it's running the game extremely well. I've got most of the options turned up high now and running the game at 1280 x 1024 quite smoothly. Very happy with the results since I was limited to 1024 x 768 with medium settings before.

I'm finding the game very challenging all of a sudden though ever since I leveled up to the 6th level. I have to get my combat strategy down better.

Hey Jagger, you mind posting your entire system specs? I've got to buy a whole new PC soon and I was going to go for the 7600GT as well but I'd be interested to see what other hardware you're running to get Oblivion going smooth.

Sure. It's actually not a great gaming rig par se. Not my choice as my wife bought it when I was over in England. Still it's not so bad I guess.

I'm not real happy with the processor but it seems to get the job done. Our other computer at home is actually better but that's not a game computer unfortunately, just one we use for my wife's photography business. I would love to see it run on that machine!

Pentium D 2.80GHz (Two processors)
1022MB Ram
250GB hard drive

I will probably double the ram soon too.

The dual core is interesting but as far as I understand it nothing really takes advantage of that capability yet. I would have preferred a much faster processor but the salesman convinced my wife that this would be good for photography use. (Sure, but what about gaming????)

After posting last night I did suffer a little slowdown on the game, especially with lot's going on on screen, and had to reduce the sliders slightly and tried knocking the resolution down a little too. The graphics still look fantastic however.

To be honest I've even played this game on my laptop at 800 by 600 with low settings and is still a treat to play. It's just such a good game.

I wont buy the Xbox just because I am waiting to buy the PS3 instead. I cant justify, or find the time, to use both consoles. I cant buy both consoles and no PC, because I still need the PC for work, and for games that dont end up on either console.

With a 7800 graphics card (if I get it), and Oblivion's support of widescreen resolutions, my PC will display the game as nice as an XBox on my plasma TV. It would be awesome.

Has a computer game generated as many responses at CP before?

I've backed off from the main quest for a while and have just been travelling around the countryside taking in the scenery and taking in the odd dungeon along the way.

The little touches in this game are incredible, like the feeling walking through a field of colourful flowers, watching the trees move in the wind, and all of a sudden a storm blows in very realistically. Amazing really.

While walking along the coastline I came across a shipwreck in the ocean. It was just so well done that I just sat back in awe.

I was sitting in a bar when a barfight broke out around me. I stood up and immediately was hacked by one of the patrons. WTF! I then started wailnig on this guy and the City guard stormed through the door, about 6 of them. Two of them zeroed in on my fight and started pounding on both of us. Great stuff!

I've played a lot of RPG's over the years but I've got to say that this might be the pinnacle so far for creating a seamless living world inside the computer. It's unsurpassed in my opinion.

Anyone have any interesting tales to tell?
