His legacy in Calgary is mixed but I think it’ll slowly improve long term. The playoff results weren’t there, but I don’t think he left the team as destitute as some people say. Especially now with Weegar and Kadri getting assets back.
Tanev
Andersson
Hannifin
Mangiapane
Lindholm
Kadri
Markstrom
Weegar
Toffoli
Zadarov
All these players were traded for positive value. All of them were acquired by Treliving. Credit to Conroy for those deals, but he wasn’t left with nothing to work with.
I genuinely think Treliving will get a third crack at a GM job, not because of Toronto, but because of his time in Calgary.

What did he do on Calgary to justify getting hired again?
We have to view his tenure from when he began. Through his whole time, the Flames made it to the 2nd round twice. In that round, there's only 2 games that's been won.
Considering the length of time he was GM, the players he had, and the amount of coaches he had, and the playoff record being abysmal, he massively fell short of expectations. Then to go to Toronto and in short time take a franchise that was having cup aspirations to a tire fire. I'm not sure what executives will see his history and say "I want him running my team."

I think it’s really hard to accept for sports fans that there is way more luck involved in the end outcomes than we’d like think. Especially in the GM position, it’s about giving your self the best odds you can at succeeding, but even then, you never push the odds so far in your favour that the results are most likely going to hit the way you want. Which is really hard when we like to believe in catch phrases like winners win etc.
If we take a look at Brad’s tenure in Calgary and with the benefit of hindsight on what our former players have accomplished I’m finding it hard not to admit the following:
- I think Brad assembled a very very good team in Calgary. Monahan, Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Bennett, Lindholm, Anderson, Hanifin, Tanev, Markstrom - was a good enough core group to win a cup. And he built that in a market that is tougher to attract talent too.
I think not acknowledging the above, when you evaluate a GMs role (provide the ingredients) isn’t fair to Brad.
Where he struggled and I think it is fair to critique:
- took to long to sort out the goalie position
- never was able to hire the right coaches
- obviously at the end he failed to keep the team together - but how much of that was bad luck.
I also think at the end here, and his entire time in Toronto, he was dealing with the hardest part of any GM job. Tinkering with an established roster to push it over the top. That’s where most GMs fail. And IMO that’s because it’s the cycle of the job where the things you have to do are actually never worth the odds if your goal was long term maintenance of your team. You end up having to mortgage your future, on moves that at best, slightly increase your odds of winning. But you are damned if you do and damned if you don’t, unless you happen to hit your lottery ticket and win.
Long rambled point to say, suggesting he didn’t do anything to earn a job after Calgary isn’t fair. Anyone taking an objective look at the team he built in a small market had to be impressed with that, regardless of the end results in the ice.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Do you realize how many Boston Pizza franchises there are out there?

Could also draw into his dad’s seat on dragon’s den. He’d be helpful though to the other dragons, because he’s such a terrible asset manager, he would guide you to “opposite” choose Brad’s investments.
