I don’t think the new CBA kicks in until Sept 2026 so it’s not the threat I thought it was

Ya I'm personally getting a little tired of the "We're happy to keep him" charade to the media, with every single player. I think the only person its fooling is the one who's saying it. Hurts to say but you would think lessons should have been learned by now.

I still think the surprise of tomorrow is Ekblad coming here to play with Weegar and Huberdeau.

I think that'd be a crazy turn. CGY then controls the market for RHD, having taken the #1 RHD UFA and holding the #1 RHD trade target.

...or at least those are my happy thoughts.

lmao Vegas is a plague. Take the 2027 and 2028 1st round picks unprotected, a prospect like Tuomas Uronen (the only interesting one they have) and just drafted Jakob Ihs-Wozniakelse if Andersson extends. If not eff that team.

I do think Calgary needs to get a bit more ruthless when it comes to these things. Hindsight is 20/20 obviously, but after the sagas of Gaudreau, Hanifin, Lindholm and so on, it's disappointing that we are in this situation yet again. Doesn't mean you have to trade away everyone when they are two years ahead of UFA status, but the fact that this keeps happening again and again is concerning.

Maybe the play is to leverage this with LA?

Give us a better return despite no extension and spend the year trying to convince him to stay. Otherwise, looks like someone you covet may end up as a division rival for 6-8 years.

Maye that's enough to get Holland to blink? Might not be the initial apparent return they offered but still better than peanuts to VGK?

Hindsight is always 20/20 but man, would've been great to have dealt him last TDL. Also, pretty crappy to whomever leaked this. We never seem to get leaks that help us out, cripes sake.

If I was Conroy I would just trade Andersson to the ####tiest team not on his NTC list and be done with it.

Have him play on a crap team for a year and have even worse numbers heading into free agency. Cut his lifetime earnings by 20-30% as a result.

Ok, not saying he should actually do that, but he should threaten it as part of this process. Andersson is being a dink.

That wouldn't surprise me either, but you'd want to move Andersson first TBH

I'd like to think this is the last time the Flames get backed into a corner like this with a player only wanting to sign with one or two teams.

It doesn't help that we know Vegas is ruthless and would probably be happy enough to bring Andersson in without an extension and then sign him next summer anyway.

Tkachuk, Hanifin, Andersson, yes all unique in their own way but still strikingly similar when it comes to restricting trade options.

If Conroy can pull a rabbit out of the hat with this Andersson trade I would love to see it. I still have faith. But I would also love to see the Flames trade an asset at peak value and get ahead of the market sometime, just once, I don't know.. just to spice things up a bit. Keep it interesting.

You can also just sit him all season and let’s see what the contract looks like after not having played for a year.

I agree, but I do think this is where Conroy is being a "players GM" and trying to build the reputation of the Flames and how they treat players (it's literally the only rationale I can think of that makes sense).

To hell with the extension talks, it resulted in sweet !@#$ all with Hanifin and Vegas.

You almost need the playing field leveled again.

Calgary had trouble attracting UFAs. This is a significant handicap. Players under term about to expire are now making it more difficult for teams to at least get full-value on their assets.

I say don't do away with 8 year terms. Make the 8 year terms attractive for teams to sign players to, but only as part of a "sign and trade". Otherwise, it is 6 years on the open market. One year may not be significant enough, but 2 is definitely significant.

I believe the Flames are in a full-blown rebuild right now anyway, but it would make me consider whom else on the team I could trade now to prevent it becoming an issue later.

Honestly that's what he should do.

Whatever team that's not Vegas that has the best offer by July 4th, just send him there.

Just to send a message to these guys that he's not going to be pushed around by these players that don't have NMCs controlling where they go.

Maximum retention auction him to the highest bidder. This is what bad management looks like. Sorry.

######bag move on Ras’ part to tell everyone he’d only extend with VGK, he could have just said I am planning to hit free agency - may be my only chance at it and Ive earned it.

CC needs to shut up and plug his leaks - assuming it isn’t him.

I wonder what the difference in return would be for an extended Ras vs rental? If the delta isn't much then might as well just get bids bases on a rental value.

I think a GM should be that way as much as possible to create "desire" in a destination that doesn't have any intrinsic desire for players.

But.

You also have to push back when you're getting pushed around. Can't be seen as an easy mark around the league. He needs to show his cajones here.

The thread title is misleading.Vegas “tops” his list isn’t the same as “only.” No one reported “Vegas or bust,” just that the player and interested team line up. We don’t know what other markets Ras values. All we know from that article is that Columbus, LA and Ottawa are places he didn’t want to sign with. Could still force the Flames into a rental return but let’s take a breath.

I get the frustration.

I don't get the hindsight armchair guy. Just silly.

But people need to chill. Tell Vegas and Andersson that they don't have the offer. Ask Andersson if he has anywhere else he'd sign or should the pivot to the rental market?

Now I’m hoping Vegas signs Ekblad instead. Would remove them as a possible destination for Andersson.
