Maceo Phillips has guys like Kanzig, Baldwin, and Aulie beat on his mobility alone- he's not the same type of player exactly. He'll become an instant fan favorite the first time he beats the s**t out of Nurse.

I wonder if Jarome has some input here. He likes ‘em big and mean. Last year it was Hunter Laing.

I guess Green Bay closer than Portland? But why was Portland the potential CHL landing spot? He isn’t drafted by them so doesn’t it come down to who is willing to sign him?

That's a good question, he was included by the Winterhawks in their list of players who were drafted this year: https://chl.ca/whl-winterhawks/artic...025-nhl-draft/
In the story, it says he's a "listed prospect", which makes it seem like they own his WHL rights, but like you say, he wasn't drafted by them, so I don't know how he became a listed prospect with Portland.

Last few years i have not gotten too up or down on flames picks because the trend seems to be within a year ir two we start to see why scouting had them in our ranks.
Hoskin and Jamieson are examples of what i mean.

Phillips looked great in both games. Way better than I expected. Decent enough skater and not too bad with the puck. Mean player too. Which the organization needs.

Things were getting a little heated tonight so he did a little skate by the Oilers bench with a FAAFO glare and lo and behold tempers immediately cooled.

Phillips might not be uber skilled, but he made a number of smart plays with the puck in transition tonight. He moves well, but he has to keep working on his boots, as he has a bit of trouble with faster opponents. Lots to be excited about, and he will be able to show more of what he can do with Green Bay of the USHL this year; players of Phillips' ilk can sometimes be buried on the NTDP team.

Phillips would be a perfect 4/5 later in his career. As a contending team, which I hope for us to become, I think he could make a similar impact as to what Bischel did for the Stars. It's going to take some time, and he is a big project (literally), but he has the tools to be a force. He was already taking Regehr-like liberties in the corner in last night's game. I was a big fan.

I thought he helped the offence out pretty well on friday. Missed the game on Sunday. He'll play for us sooner than later I think!

Still liking the pick. I thought he chased the game a bit to make hits, but that is expected in these rookie games. Not something that can happen at higher levels. I liked the description someone had of him tossing players around like a sack of potatoes. He seemed be knocking down players with ease. He will be a tough player to play against.
