Blow is expensive, you've got to thin it out as best you can.

Absolutely too much for too long based on the season he just had, but Frederic was a serious needle-mover before that. He's big (6'3"), tough, and has game-changing physicality. On top of that, he skates well, and has good defensive awareness. I was actually hoping Conny would sign him this summer- but I wouldn't give him that type of contract, and especially not that kind of term.

Broberg, Holloway, Foegele, McLeod out.

Skinner, Arvidsson, Klingberg, Frederic in.

When McDavid sits down with his agent this summer, they’ll have to see the Oilers have no hope of winning going forward. They’re cooked.

It doesn’t matter how many points he puts on the board, you can’t win with Bouchard on your top-pairing. He’s absolutely clueless when it comes to defending- then you add in Nurse and Klingberg? It’s a miracle they even made the finals, and a testament to how valuable McDavid and Drai are.

Too bad they bought him out. They could really use another goalie.

I thought the term was going to be because it was like league minimum salary or something. This is insane.

Role players generally don't get 8 years because they're usually replaceable with an equal or better alternative well within that timeframe. They're not like superstars where you need the 8th year's dough to entice them to stay.

There's literally no need.

If he wanted to stay to have a shot with McDavid then there was no need to go beyond, like, four.

It's like the spirit of Chiarelli is still pulling the strings there. Amazing.

Oilers Assistant General Manager, Keith Gretzky. He's one main connection to Trent Frederic. Back in 2016, Keith Gretzky was the Director of Scouting for the Boston Bruins. That year, Boston and Keith drafted Trent Frederic with the 29th overall pick in the 1st Round. Trent was tabbed to go later in the 2nd or 3rd round, and it was alarmingly announced from the get go, that Boston viewed him as a potential 3rd line NHLer. Keith took at lot of flack for taking him in the first round. Maybe this contract has undercurrents of Keith attempting to justify his pick, and making it appear solid in the end?

The Athletic was projecting him to get around 2 x $3.4M, so this is really banking on the cap going up. I don't know how effective he will be in the 2nd half of his contract, so it seems like a risky deal, with no apparent benefit.

Someone like Mangiapane is likely going to make less, and get a lot less term, despite the better production.

Clearly the Oilers see him as their next captain and want to make sure he's locked down for that.

Signing a low producing, bottom 6 player for 8 years is crazy business.

There isn’t a single reason that can be given to support this decision. It’s ####ing wild.

he was 13th among Oilers forwards in ice-time during the playoffs, logging 11:24 minutes per game, ahead of only Podkolzin (11:02). Even if you like his intangibles, even if you think he's had a bit of a down year ... signing a player like him to an 8 year deal is just insane, no matter how you slice it.

so in short: A+ deal, no notes.

Oilers back to paying for potential, how's that working on the Nurse contract?

Please never change.

Logically you'd think that going to 8 years gives the team a discount by providing security to the player. But I guess with the expectations of a rising cap, the Oilers actually are the ones paying for the security of cost certainty.

It just seems like an unnecessary bet for a team to make for player whose offensive upside seems very limited.

Paying Broberg 4.60M? Crazy!
Paying Frederic 3.75M? Hell yes!

Paying Holloway 2.30M? Are you nuts?!
Paying J Skinner 3.0M? WHERE DO I SIGN?!

Paying Foegele 3.50M? **blows rape whistle**
Paying Arvidsson 4.00M? **jizzes**

For the same money, they chose to ship out younger, better players, and bring in older, worse players. Excellent GM'ing.
