Rantenan based on play will get less, a la Lindholm or the Dallas D now on Oilers that help out and had to take a show me 1 year.

People invest far too much energy on the Oilers on this flames fan website . It's a wild inferiority complex.

If Rantanen loved it in Denver he would Thrive in Calgary, same setting, better tax rate, not having to deal with the American attitude.
If Calgary brings the offer I think we have a legit shot. Geopolitics do play a part in Millionaires decisions.
2 years left on Makar deal, Trump still in office. I think he comes home with his wife and starts his family and is Captain of the Flames for the Home opener of the new Building.

Honestly, I'd be fine going after Rantanen if it's shorter than 7 years. Maybe 3 and see if we can land Makar as a UFA and go from there. As other posters have pointed out, I worry about Hubderdeau 2.0. We are devoid of elite talent though.

Life's way to short and there's things for me to actually get worked up about as opposed to the Oilers-Kings first round matchup.
Also, I loved the old Smythe, Patrick, Norris, and Adams Division playoffs, so don't mind the divisional round. Bad luck the Kings have been the third best team in the division I guess...
|
I am not worked up.
Also, I got into hockey more in depth when Iggy arrived, so the previous rivalries mean nothing to me outside of Edmonton and Vancouver. That's why I feel like the NHL is trying to manufacture that. I was maybe 4 I think when the last BOA happened in the playoffs prior to 2022.
No more fighting let's just be friends.

Apparently DAL offered something around $12M which 'wasn't close' for the Rantanen camp - they appear to want $14M.
I want no part of paying a 29 year old $14 X 7. That's a horrible idea.
And take a look at how he has looked in CAR - what do people think he'll do here?

No chance he gets less than 7 years though. Most teams would gladly give him the 8x$12 that Dallas has offered him. Plus he can also win with the stars.

It just seems like they are wasting time. Even Carolina you knew what his ask was in Colorado and if he isn't taking less why would he take less on a team he didn't choose.
He also is a finish, so I do wonder if he wants out of the USA unless its Colorado. The Flames must have some intel on him and his desires if they have kept the cap space open, and all the smoke around them going after him.

No state tax in Texas.

This stalemate is going to hold-up the trade market I think. Some teams probably waiting with their "rental" trade package for him and gun shy to make other moves until this is decided one way or another

Guessing he is traded, I can't see the Canes losing the player without any return.
Key is where will he be traded to,

Maybe he doesn't want to make his retirement contract decision too quickly.

If the playoff started today 1-8, Vegas would play Colorado.
Both systems have flaws and will produce ‘unwanted’ matchups.
