The oilers don’t do conventional as much much as other teams. Partly because they’re now restricted due to the salary cap, and partly because they just do things differently. Albeit, not always better, but different. Really who’s to say you can’t have a puck moving defenceman as a 6th or 7th?

Who says never? It’s statistically relevant that most teams don’t make the playoffs when they are out at US Thanksgiving. You are saying it’s “people” posting it’s mathematically impossible which is entirely different. It’s statistically likely that they don’t.
I know you want to regale us with oilers did it stories, but it’s math that some teams make it.
It’s like saying that the oilers always make bad moves. Always is 100%.
Of course the oilers don’t always make bad moves. Which ones are good? I’ll let you know when I see one.

Nobody said you can't have a puck-moving defenceman as a 6th or 7th. But he has to be able to defend, too, because you can't move the puck when the other team has possession. Klingberg's JFresh card ranks him at 0% on even-strength defence, which makes him one of the worst two or three players in the league at that facet of the game. And that's before he took 14 months off to get surgery that most players his age don't fully recover from.

Right, I agree, it’s not a blanket statement, similar to how a 6th or 7th Dman can’t be a puck mover. Things change and you work with what you have to work with. Outside the conventional wisdom is not always a bad thing. Sometimes it works, where staying conventional doesn’t.

Fair enough, but that’s why the low risk aspect is why I’m ok with the move. If he can’t defend at all, then he’s back in the minors. It’s worth a shot imho.

Contrary to popular opinion on here, our back end isn’t as bad as people say. Sure when nurse or bouchard gaff they don’t mess around and usually end up on the highlight reels, but overall their game is pretty good. Ekholm and kulak are solid, and emberson is coming along nicely. The 6th and 7th spots are what the team is attempting to fill here. That said we definitely could use another top 4 guy.

Pairing him with a defensively sound left-handed partner would best fit him. Nurse, Ekholm, or Brett Kulak would all be great partners for Klingberg. Nurse might be the best fit out of all three of them.

At this price, the puck-moving Klingberg could be a win-win, with Klingberg slotting in next to Darnell Nurse on the second pairing, providing a steady puck-mover to complement Nurse’s speed and aggression. This would boost Edmonton’s chances of winning the Cup, not to mention Klingberg’s value as a free agent this summer.

The thing is, I don't think that's an ‘if’. It's low-ish risk for no reward, and his cap hit ($1,746,667 according to PuckPedia) cannot be fully buried in the minors. If they demote him, they're still stuck with a cap hit of almost $600,000.
Surely there were better and cheaper ways to fill that hole.

That’s why you go 11 and 7 perhaps. You play klinger primarily when you’re down a goal or more. The more stay at home guy gets the ice time when they’re even or ahead. But that’s just my own theory, I haven’t actually heard it anywhere.

Brilliant piece of tactical work by the Coilers. What’s the risk? If he doesn’t work out we will bury him! This is all preceding on the knowledge that every GM in the league wants to help the Oilers and that the Oilers themselves have ANYTHING worth trading to get a “top 4 D”.
Guess what Oiler fans - this is your deadline acquisition whether it works or not.

But Josh Brown Ty Emberson Troy Stecher Victor Arvidsson Jeff Skinner doesn't count, because reasons! John Klingberg is the answer!

So now your plan is to sit this guy most of the game.
BTW, this puts Edmonton over the max roster size, though they are technically compliant because of Kane being on LTIR. They can't bring anyone else in without moving someone, barring more injuries.
