I usually don't give George Canyon a second thought but that version of Johnny B Goode was incredibly well done. It's such an old rock n roll staple that it would be tough to adapt but he pulled it off. Canyon is pretty damn good!

I certainly hope that the forces of the Universe align to let Monahan score 3 goals in the Jackets next game and that he gets a few Oilers jerseys to give away after fans toss them on the ice. He deserves something great to happen after last night.

That was an emotional ride. I hope that brings the family some closure in some small way.
Huberdeau and Kadri dominated that game - wouldn't it be something if those two somehow rejuvenated each others seasons? They actually have strong underlaying numbers in previous stints together, but just weren't getting the results.

The 2 kids seem so well behaved as well.
So many new people approaching them, playing with them not a single tantrum or tear. Lil Johnny seems to play with everyone.

They've had some very nice plays in the past, often in the midst of line changes where they wound up together. Regular shifts haven't seemed to work. But I feel like it's not been given a long run. Both of those guys play on instinct and they've never seemed on exactly the same wavelength.

This is a particularly interesting observation. No stats, but this feels like it is true. If they are playing together on a structured breakout and zone entry it doesn't seem to work. But get them out together when there is less structure (for both teams) and maybe a little caos, and they seem to read they play well and make things happen.

It probably looks better when they are caught in-between line changes because Kadri has to get rid of the puck.
If Kadri holds the puck he is not passing.

Huberdeau was pretty good.
Even on his "good" games, it's usually just more flashy. That's not what matters at the end of the day with him and isn't very sustainable.
He was doing the right things and pushing the play north and being hard on pucks in that game. Winning individual battles and leaning on players to go along with the soft hands and nifty passes that fans expect.
That's the blueprint for Huberdeau to come the closest he will to earning that contract.

Yeah, Huberdeau looks his best when he is playing like a Team Canada 4th liner, grinding along the boards and fighting for pucks.
He is the best 10.5M 2nd line grinder in the league and he is all ours.

You're sarcastic but a bit of truculence from huberdeau sure makes makes him a much more effective player.
It helped that kadri seemed to understand his assignment too.
The contract will suck no matter what but I think fans can stomach it if he's bringing a net positive to the game like yesterday.

Huberdeau's best games have been where's been physical. Just expect some penalties along the way because he seems to be the guy caught out in scrums.

Not being sarcastic about his best games being when he has been physical.
First game vs Vancouver he was hitting and playing along the boards. His goal came from the front of the net.
It is what it is with the contract. He is engaged.

Thought Coleman had a great game. He was a beast. He played fast and with a lot of urgency.

IMO Huberdeau's effort is pretty consistent.
And his hockey sense remains strong most of the time.
The problem is he seems to have stopped being able to make the plays with the quickness / precision required to do what his brain is telling him to do, and why he looks more effective playing a very simple game that doesn't look a whole lot like the player he was in Florida

That’s why he needs consistent time with another player. Plays without thinking come easier when there’s familiarity. He knew where Sam B was going, he knew what Carter V was going to do. This comes across like blaming line mates but it’s not. I just think the team has been too knee jerk around line combos in general. Some hockey tandems actually take a little while to click.

Minor point, but Huberdeau mostly played with Bennett and Duclair, not Verhaeghe.

Major point.
When he played with them, they were the weakest possession line on the Panthers that year.

Thanks to everyone who posted the highlights, interviews, tributes, etc.
I wasn’t able to watch the game, but teared up watching clips here on CP.
Terrific job by the Flames organization on the night.

That’s fine, I stand corrected. The point wasn’t really who he played with - it was how much he played with them.
