Hockey is played on ice, not on paper.
It's time Huberdeau was replaced on the PP1.

I think they would be the same at best. It’s a low skill team that is winning games by out hustling their opponents.

No thanks. Prefer the team learns to play the right way and is not a tanker...with ZERO guarantee that gets them anywhere further than any other plan. Like playing well and consistently.

It’s really not a losing culture. Every team that has won has gone through pain and finished in the basement before they won. It involves some luck as well when you draft in the lottery that you don’t draft a career loser like McDavid who only cares about points.
The Edmonton comparisons are not fair. That’s a special type of suck.

So has every team that has not won.

Why I said it involves some luck. For every MacKinnon Barkov or Stamkos you could end up with Hopkins Slafkovsky types.
The good thing is the next 2 drafts seem to indicate it’s a better crop of talent.

Oh year, these next two drafts are critical to unearthing that elite center, and hop[efully two elite players overall. It would be a disaster to finish with 11th or higher pick and forfeit it to Montreal this year. I mean, let's be realistic it's likely exactly what the Flames will do, but man do I hope we somehow avoid that and get a top 10 pick this year.

I think we all know how this is going to go...
We're desperate for a high end center and there are a few of them in the projected in top 10 this year.
We're going to stay in the mix until the later in the season then slide.
We'll then lose our 11th-17th pick to habs and be picking twice in the late 20s.
This is the flames way.

I think you are underselling just how much luck factors into drafting elite talent. It's probably the single factor with the highest effect on success.

It is certainly not ideal, but falling out of the top-ten and into the twenties at this year's draft is not a "disaster." It's a setback.

Not a disaster for sure.
But if it turns Flames top pick was 32nd overall, that would really stink. Part of that means the club is maybe better than we think but still, that late a pick would hurt.

It’s sure going to drag out the mediocrity. The Flames have zero centres in their prospect pool and would be sliding out of the top ten on the back of two thirty year+ old centres. The team will be in tough until they get an actual #1 centre and the top of the draft is by far the best chance at getting one.

It took Edmonton 4 swings to get a franchise player and they had first dibs on the draft class each of those times lol.
You kind of need the right crop of talent at the top and potentially a lottery win or to finish bottom three to get one of those guys.
It's extraordinarily hard to finish that low as we've seen so the Flames are looking at either needing a lottery win or to find a diamond in the rough like they did with JG or Tampa with Kucherov.

I’m not underselling luck. Luck plays a lot into everything not just drafting. You need to be lucky when you win as well.
I’m just saying the next 2 drafts have elite talent at the top. It’s not like a Nail Yakupov vs Ryan Murray or Slafovksky vs Wright. Or RNH.
We could be getting that franchise altering player in the top 5.
Chicago, LA, Tampa, Florida, Colorado they all went through the pain. I know others have as well and it hasn’t turned around as quickly for them but they have had other issues as well poor management or ownership. I don’t see that being an issue here.

The issue is not being able to enjoy a single game without people crying about not being bad enough.
Its not like the Flames are spending to the cap and trading away firsts. Hopefully they use cap space for more draft capital.

Lol! Wouldnt it be funny if teams could use 'cap space' to buy draft picks?
The team at the end of the season with the most un-used cap space gets the highest pick!
Or just totally re-vamp the lottery system!

I would say with the cheapest payroll in the NHL they should be focused on making sure the new building is full and team is competitive.
They will likely be spending to the cap.
