One thing with these situations is there is no reason for a structure to ever burn from a wildfire. It is poor design decisions that leads to buildings down.

I suspect you’ll see some massive changes in what type of vegetation is allowed in Canmore and Banff, which will mean the loss of a lot of trees. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see a massive firebreak all around town, taking down a ton of trees.

You couldn't build a firebreak big enough to stop these fires.
They are throwing embers multiple kilometers ahead of the flame front.

Exactly. With proper conditions, heat, fuel, etc. Little can stop it. Very sad. These are lives, homes, businesses that are lost. Hard to stomach. Hopefully everyone got out safely

Now is the time to address the changes required. Towns burning to the ground aren’t accidents or random events. They are the foreseeable outcome to the design of these communities.
Lytton burned to the ground and it didn’t result in drastic change.
It’s not supposed to make someone feel better. It’s supposed to make people angry that this is repeatedly allowed to happen.

There's no planning outside of not having a town near a forest that will stop this.

You put non flammable roofs on buildings. The primary mechanism of buildings burnings is those embers landing on roofs lighting them on fire.

Here is a starting point of a fairly accessible podcast or transcript if you don’t want to listen and links to a bunch of the research.

Of course it will get political. Why wouldn't it? Are we just going to accept yet another town burning to the ground without maybe addressing why it happened?

Call me crazy, but what we need to do, is to stop heating up the planet.

You can decide for yourself why...we didn't used to get 15 straight days of 30 degree weather with ZERO rainfall though
