Just reading about these scrimmages is more exciting than the entire last 2 Flames seasons have been

This thread was all warm and fuzzy for me until GreenLantern dropped the “ol’ NHL 11” bomb.

I am tempering my hope because this is what all kids coming up look like. I remember that Japanese “”””phenom”””” that was all the rage. He was a div 1 boob with good marketing.

No, everyone can do that at 9 yrs old. I’m not sure any sport has increased skill as much as hockey has in the past 15 years. Soccer used to be a one footed game but now they progressed that every player can boot with both feet.

Everyone can dangle now in hockey. The big dumb idiots who could smash can now dangle.

I think the small area games and the likes of Darryl Belfry have changed the sport more than anything. Defenceman are now quarterbacks, they aren’t there to serve the forwards.

Insane how this compares to the Eric nystrom camps. I think it’s going to become who is the gamer in the tough games.

Brustewicz is probably regretting his decision to sign with the Flames after attending this camp and seeing the Parekh brothers, Mews, Morin, and Grushnikov

Spoiler!

The SAIT arena Mike Commodore, JP Damphouse camps as the Ducks were in the finals are truly depressing. Twenty years ago there weren't as strict rules around rookie camps, and they have several.

Winsport is an abortion in design. There is not a hockey parent who doesn’t hate that arena they just played. Value engineering at its worst.

Grushnikov will be a great compliment to our skilled offensive d.

Relatedly Bader now has the Flames with the 11th strongest prospect pool
I can’t recall what it was last but it’s a big jump

Up 8 spots according to:

+8 is tied for the biggest change with NYI (31 to 23).

particularly as this would be before the Savoie deal how bad does a team's prospect pool have to be to be worse than Edmonton's? having said that all of the teams below them have an excuse except Ottawa and to an extent Vancouver

Only got to watch the first half on the stream.

From everything I have seen of Bruzstewicz, he reminds me of Adam Fox. Not saying that’s what he is going to become, but he has similar qualities. Isn’t the fastest skater, isn’t the most skilled, doesn’t have a bomb from the point, but he is calm and poised with the puck, has good vision, and get the puck to high danger areas. I saw a couple of bad reads defensively, where he gave up the middle of the ice too easily, but that is pretty easy to correct.

Holy cow, is all I have to say about Stromgren. Big, fast, great hands. If he can work on his consistency shift to shift, he will be a heck of a player.

Can see why they targeted Jurmo in the Lindholm trade. Big, good skater, looked poised in this setting. Still very raw, but the physical tools are there.

Misa is an assassin out there. You don’t notice him on the ice until it’s too late and then the puck is in the back of the net.

Isa Parekh is pretty smooth out there, not flashy like his brother, but steady and is consistently in the right place. I could see him playing in the AHL next year, but probably better for his career to go to University for a year or two before going pro. Calgary would be smart to be there with a pen and paper when he is ready though.

Zayne Parekh was looking to put on a show for the people, and he did, hopefully some of the plays were a result of trying to put on a show and not totally just the way he plays. I know there is a lot of flash and dash and high risk in his game and he certainly has the skills to go along with that style, and I don’t want to see him lose that at all, but learn to pick his spots a bit better. Give a nice long look in camp, to be around high end coaches and pros, but ultimately he should be headed back to the OHL, and hopefully get a staring role on Team Canada at the WJC.

You can tell that Coronato knows what he needs to do to impress this year, and it’s about playing structured and getting to spots to use that shot.

Honzek isn’t the type of player that is going to standout in a wide open format like today, his game is more about puck protection and doing the work down low. In basketball they use the term half court player, that is going to be more Honzek’s game and Calgary needs that type of player too. We lost a lot of that when we traded Tkachuk.

Did Honzek come back or did he get hurt again? Albeit a minor thing I'm sure.

Thank you to all the posters from those of us unable to attend!

Your breakdowns and evaluations are fun to read, the perspectives on different players a joy to sift through and the honesty of what you see is noteworthy.
Bravo!

No more Okhotiuk/Carpenter type trades, please. Imagine missing out on a prospect like Misa for 8-9 games of a player like that.

Conroy confirmed it was minor. Said by the time they stitched Honzek up there wasn't time for him to come back in.

On that note, I generally don't like female announcers purely for their voice. It often sounds at a higher octave to me. My daughter said that often the problem is the sound guys don't adjust the equipment properly, so it highlights the 'higher' notes. This may make sense, but when I hear an NBA or NFL female announcer or even Hazel on the Jays broadcast, it does not sound like that to me. Maybe they are better or have different voices or the sound people are better. (Maybe the above is just to avoid the casual misogyny accusations, but I do judge by my experience listening and not by gender.)

However, Sandra does not have that effect at all. I have not heard her much but just on the Youtube stream, with likely substandard equipment, she sounded really good. Smooth, controlled and a good play-by-play. I am really impressed. I would be fine if she made the jump to replace Ball.
