Just over 17 years. She retired as a player after the 2006 Olympics and joined HNIC that fall.

Being a woman was not the sole reason for her hiring. But getting young girls and women more involved in sport is something that society has wanted to see and has been working on for a loooong time. A great way of helping that is putting a woman's voice into sports that do not traditionally have a woman's voice. So when a young girl watches a hockey game they hear and realize that "Hey this is for me too!" I don't see an issue with the fact she was a woman playing a role in her hiring. I hope that they continue to keep things like this in mind when hiring.

That's how I feel about her too. I never thought she was as "bad" as others thought she was. I thought she was pretty darn good. But more importantly, in a sport dominated by mostly white males in what seems like an exclusive sport, it was good to see a female broadcaster break through.
I think the doors she potentially opened for women will significantly define her much more so that what people think of her voice, broadcasting skill, whatever. That is what her legacy will leave. Good on her. All the best.

I really liked George Stroumboulopoulos. I think he added a bit of character to HNIC

It is Francis.
If you go back to his early 2000s TV appearances (when Scooter registered), Francis always used to wink and say “Scooter out” at the end of his interviews. Bugged me when he did it with Iggy.

I liked his "I'm just a fan - you guys tell me stuff" approach. They should have given him time to grow into it.

At the time the rumoured issue was that the panelists liked a slower, more traditional host that would lead and hand hold them into speaking to their pre determined points.
George was quick witted and loved to toss an idea out and then throw to a random panel guy. They all apparently hated it.

I can totally see that. The panelists do not like to think on their feet, as you say.

Yeah I thought George was decent as well, was really too bad to see them flip back so quickly and not give it more of a chance.

This seems far fetched. The producers control the flow of everything. They’d never let a new host skip around unexpectedly.

From decades as Don's lap cat to reading poems, listing off dates of irrelevant #### and preparing defense papers for the Oilers.
What a precious little ####.

The pre/post/intermission segments actually had a bit of flavor to them.
What was also refreshing was he wasn't a hockey guy, but someone more interested in people. So it brought a fresh angle to the broadcast and his sit downs with players. The upside to that was you also didn't have obvious personal fandoms bleeding through like you do now with these arse-kissing water carriers. Personally I think the host should always be the most impartial personality there.
He also wasn't ancient/bordering on senile.
Go figure HNIC finally did something right and then immediately went right back to amateur hour.

Ron was on with Ailish today and instead of talking about the holidays like every other guest he went on a rant about how he’s certain the Oilers will be making the playoffs.

From what I heard at the time, they got rid of Stroumboulopoulos because they were cutting costs and his contract was cheaper to buy out than MacLean's. It was a pure bean-counting decision.
