If you mean sign someone for 8 years and only retain on 2-3 years, no you can’t.
You can only retain a percentage up to 50% of a full length of a contract.

Man it'd be nice to see the Flames do a rebuild right for once.
Instead of holding onto aging superstars until they are worth nothing or walk for free, get a haul for prime aged higher end players, and use cap space as an asset to improve trade returns.
Let's load up on draft picks for the next three seasons and set ourselves up for some high end picks with our own firsts.
Then be ####ing patient and build from within instead of trying to speed things up by signing terrible UFA contracts and trading excess draft picks for middling players who are older and more expensive.

The team had a historically bad year.
The big difference is the Avs roster was solid and not a complete dumpster fire like Calgary.
Fun fact: The Avs goalie that year is playing in Edmonton.

I’m not convinced that after we move the UFA’s we struggle any worse than now.

Why keep Weegar. Looks like many teams want D. So trade him as well.

Yeah, screw keeping Weegar.
Should be no one left on this roster with a contract longer than 2-3 years when the dust is settled. We shouldn't have any problems hitting the cap floor with the $5M we'll have to retain on Huberdeau's contract for 8 years.

If Kadri keeps his recent play up, I think he may get moved. He does have a NMC, so he will control his destiny, but if they Flames rebuild then I imagine he would happily waive for any team that is more competitive, or nearly any other team. The one nice thing about acquiring Kadri to help tip the scales back somewhat with respect to risk, is the fact that he can probably be had for peanuts. If someone wants a dollars-in, dollars-out deal, then of course Kadri's price goes up.
The video in the OP seemed a lot more speculative than actually announcing anything, but Lebrun's The Athletic article seemed more concrete. Hope it happens. Exciting times.
Please staple Zary and Pospisil to Kadri until the trade deadline please!

Backlund held out simply to say he can put "NHL captain" on his resume for when he goes into a Swedish hall of fame, and he's going through the motions at best with some bad turnovers these past games.
I'm sure there's an unofficial handshake agreement to extend after the two years and he hands off the captaincy while plays another year, but if some one is interested now, trade him too.

All that said, LeBrun and the hanger on Dreger, like Zadorov's agent, strike while the Flames are in the eastern media time zone and he can maybe chat with some Flames media member and staffers in person with just having to drive to the rink.
I don't think any of this is new after the Edwards moves at the Heritage Classic to stop contract negotiations; it's just now playing to a bigger audience with the Flames out east and Conroy actually out there to confirm in person and let him play the media games.

So where would a rebuild leave us with Zary, Coronato, Pelletier, and Wolf? Don't rebuilds take years? Wouldn't these players just want to bounce as soon as they can if we're just going to be #### ass bad for a large chunk of their careers?
Also, who was the last team to do a crazy, full on firesale and how long did it take to start being competetive again?

Finally, open for business sounds all well and good. But many teams have proclaimed it, including the Oilers and then the joke of a GM here the early 2010s.
It's a lot harder to do in a cap era with movement clauses.
It'd be great if the Flames could shed some of these guys asap before Xmas, getting a return of more NHL young players as opposed to magic bean picks, and make a push (and the growth that young players' would get) with those and our other players, this year.
I would hold onto Tanev at least until March. While I like Zadorov, he can go, but in the above scenario, if they can retool with young players on the fly in season, having a vet defender would be crucial to a push.
There are also 20+ games after the trade deadline.

It was mentioned earlier, but both Colorado and the NYI would have legitimate interest in Kadri.
I think either team could be negotiated with to take Kadri without retaining any salary.
This is Kadri and not Huberdeau and both the Isles and the Avs had interest in signing/resigning him prior to him signing in Calgary.
Make it happen Conroy!
