For some reason I feel a burning desire to become a Sharks fan a bit later this week.

Grier spent way too much time in Edmonton, he thinks this is the most successful season ever

I'm all for a winless season.

But if they beat Edm this might just be the best November ever.

We joke but teams are not tanking for 25% chance. Not even last year. All their success and contracts for a decade just caught up to them and then rebuilding too late.

This is really bad though, they are being compared to expansion teams of the past.

So a team might be out of it by November but are not officially eliminated until say Mid February. If they only win 3 games for the rest of the year they would have 6 points. Maybe they win more, but they would still be in the business of winning, so they couldn't just sell off and tank.

A team that gets eliminated 2.5 weeks before the end of the season wins 5 of 8 games having 10 points, so they would pick ahead of the above team.

There are probably still some flaws with this, but it in order to get the first pick you still have to be trying to win games. You can't just go trading your UFA's away for picks and prospects.
Teams would tank to get officially eliminated faster. That would be a race.

If they lost all their games the whole year except to the oilers I don't care how badly everything else goes the season was worth it.

Yeah, teams tank to try get a top 5 pick. With the lottery odds the way they are today, there’s little point in trying to finish at the absolute bottom of the standings. The Red Wings were by far the worst team in the league in 2019-20, and they drafted 4th overall.

The Wings and the Canucks have had some abysmal lottery luck. But the Wings draft (mostly) at least recently.

Raymond is better than both Byfield and Lafreniere at this point. Seider could go top-3 in a redraft. But prior to that, Zadina and Veleno (who's having a good year so far) and Rasmussen and Cholowski and Svechnikov have been underwhelming.

I don't know what I want to happen more: The Sharks lose tonight and get their first win on Thursday, or the Sharks win tonight and pull into a tie for last overall with the Oilers on Thursday.

San Jose wins their first game of the season. I'm actually thinking this makes Thursday's game with the Oilers even more interesting. The Sharks will be feeling like maybe than can win games. The Oilers will be scared.

A regulation win would pull this historically bad team into a tie (in points) with the Oilers, too.

I heard some Stuff on the 1943/44 Rangers who went 6-39-5 for the 50 game season. They went 0-14-1 to start the year, than won 4 of 5 to get to 4-15-1. Than only won 2 more games in the last 30 and finished 0-17-4 in their final 21 games.

So this is where the Sharks will win all their games, sucks to be you Oilers.

I hadn't heard about that team.

I keep thinking about the Washington Capitals' first year in the league. 8-67-5.... 8 wins! They won 10% of their games....

Bill Mikkelson (yes Meghan and Brendan's dad) was -82 that year! mind you he was -53 with the Islanders the year before, so it's possible he was part of the problem

Grier seems incompetent. The team needs veterans to shelter the youngins and help the goalies a bit. Not more giveaways which Addison is good at. Sharks need to tank. Sharks will lose 8-3 now vs 5-1. Yay. And he loses a 5th when he could have used a 7th.

The most out there draft idea I heard was that at the end of the year (or beginning of the season) the team who finished last (32nd) would have to pick another team (can't pick themselves) and where ever they finish, that is their position in the next draft.

This is brilliant for three reasons.

1. Tanking is gone, you have every reason not to improve

2. Worst teams still get much better odds for who they pick

3. Gives the fans another team to watch or actively cheer for/against teams that they would have never cared to watch

It is so out there but would be so much fun hate watching another team.

The 1980/81 Jets started the year 1-2-1 and then never won again until Christmas, starting the season 1-25-7.

They finished the year with 32 points, and then drafted Dale Hawerchuk, and the next year they got 80 points.
