We can argue all we want about whether athletes should be able to bet on other sports or not but as long as it is against the rules and as long as those rules are clear, which they are I have zero sympathy for anyone who breaks the rules. If these guys are too stupid to follow basic rules they deserve the punishment.

As for this case with how easily Pinto and the NHLPA took the punishment it seems pretty clear that they know what happened was wrong/bad.

Yes, league and PA rules are rules and they are pretty clear in this case. If you're caught you don't have a leg to stand on, just like any other league rules. NFL players making bets within team facilities, same thing.

Having others make bets under your account is even stupider, even if he didn't have knowledge of what or who those others were betting on. Would he give his banking passwords to the same people? You're a couple small steps away from extortion at that point; though maybe he was being extorted/blackmailed?

Players should be allowed to bet, but only on their own team winning.

Similar to how they should be allowed any and all performance enhancing drugs that they wish.

Anything to try to motivate the fat cats and crumb bums on the Flames.

So, turns out Pinto's big crime was using a proxy to place bets in the US, while he was in Canada.

Quote:
"I had my buddies, because I was in Canada, just place bets for me in America," Pinto said. "I wasn't a Canadian citizen, so I couldn't really use a Canadian sportsbook. So I just had my buddies place bets for me, and that's proxy betting. So, that's obviously a big no-no.

So, still no allegations he was betting at all on hockey, just betting through a proxy, which is against the rules for obvious reasons.

Virtually nil... not even Shane Pinto would take that action. Vegas should be all over it thou.

41 games seems a little excessive for that, but he admitted that he knew it was illegal and did it anyway.

I think that’s a very reasonable punishment. It’s like tasking positive for a masking agent for PEDs. You might be not taking it to mask PED use but because it interferes with PED enforcement it’s banned and carries the same consequence.

It’s such a small step between proxy betting and proxy betting on yourself like the NBA player did.

The players make tonnes of money off of the NHLs gambling partnerships. In exchange for that money they need to follow a very strict set of rules. That isn’t unreasonable.

Would using a VPN carry the same sort of punishment?

Also, I didn't realize that you couldn't bet on sports in Canada if you were a U.S. citizen. Is that actually the case? You'd think (if allowed) he'd actually prefer to place the bets in Canada where winnings aren't taxed.
