This will cause the next great lockout, where players want more available cap to be used by the teams. Teams will want a structure that is easier to manage/maneuver around, such as limiting contract lengths, NTCs, NMCs, etc. Ultimately, contracts will start to have shorter base terms, but team and player options will be introduced.

It will never happen, but in a perfect world, every player would get the same base salary during the season, and then the pie would be divvied up at the end based on performance. You'd never have to worry about over paying a player again, and players would always be hungry to perform at their best level and sign with teams that will give them the best opportunities regardless of things like climate.
I imagine the process for dividing the pie between hundred of players and so many factors to consider would be difficult, especially when lost time to injuries is factored in, but maybe one day our future AI overlords will be able to do it effectively.
