Also, a two-year deal is very generous. Does he get that elsewhere?

The AHL points leader, Michael Carcone just signed a 2-year one-way league minimum deal with Arizona. He had 9 more points than Phillips, but Phillips had 5 more goals in one more game.
Phillips is likely looking for a similar deal, and will likely get it from at least one team.

What?
The Flames owe him absolutely nothing.
They paid him over 400K to play pro hockey the last 5 years.
4 different coaches never saw enough to play him in the NHL.
He has earned the right to test the market and/or try and find a better gig now, and good for him
This team owes him squa###### though.

Carcone has been with Arizona for 3 yrs and has done some stuff for them
It would be hard for any team to give Phillips a one way multi yr deals while guys like Comtois, Kostin, Steel, Yamamoto, Sprong, Lewis… etc can be had for little

Again, I'm only saying this would make sense for a very select handful of teams (less than a handful).

5+ teams all with the same offer? You go $10k more. Not a million.

For Tiny, I'm willing to go $100k more, cos I have a soft spot for a Calgary kid.

I Hope he moves on if only so there isn’t another Phillips thread.
I wish him well. He played in the same association as my kids. It’s already an awesome story for a local kid his size. And will be a better one if he makes it. But I probably have a better chance at winning the lottery. Let’s all move on.

You don't think there will be a thread that gets bumped every time he has a good game if he signs somewhere else?

I think the biggest issue with Phillips is that he is simply not offensive enough. It took him 4 seasons to become a PPG in the AHL, and he still hasn't 'destroyed' the AHL. In his defence, it isn't like he is cheating for offence either, which is great, but when you start comparing his numbers, it just isn't THAT impressive.
YR GP Pts Age
1 - 65 38 20
2 - 38 33 21
3 - 30 21 22
4 - 65 68 23
5 - 66 76 24
Compare those numbers with
Dube:
1 - 37 39 20
2 - 13 13 21
Then he graduated and never looked back, but on the 4th line.
Mangiapane:
1 - 66 41 20
2 - 39 46 21
3 - 15 17 22
Then he got called up and never looked back, but again, started on the 4th line.
Ruzicka
1 - 54 27 20
2 - 28 21 21
3 - 16 20 22
Then he got called up playing mostly the 4th line that year.
Phillips is really difficult to compare because usually players who have a lot of talent get promoted in the first few years. Phillips had to play through the covid years, which might have messed things up for him a little while. I also don't think he cheats for points, as he plays defence, goes to the dirty areas, and even plays physical. I just don't think he is big enough to become a reliable checker in the NHL, but he doesn't have the offensive ability to make up for it, not nearly enough it seems. When you look at other former smaller players (who are quite a bit bigger than him as well), they usually hit a PPG in their first season, and don't spend years in the AHL.
Gerbe was more recent (and for that reason, more relevant), but he was a tank. He entered the AHL as a 21 year old.
1 - 57 56 21
2 - 44 38 22
Then he graduated, and never looked back until towards of his career in the NHL (and Europe). Gerbe had massive legs, and was very fast and strong.
I don't think adding a lot of mass to Phillips necessarily improves his game. I remember St. Louis being asked this about Gaudreau, and he said that adding weight to certain frames sometimes just slows down a player, and Gaudreau thrives with his agility. I can't think of anyone that fits the bill of being 'slight' as well as playing in the AHL other than Steve Sullivan, and that was in the 90's. However, here is his stats (for those that don't remember, he was listed as 5'9", and 165lbs - still bigger than Phillips, but a similar enough build):
1 - 75 81 20
2 - 53 75 21
3 - 15 15 22
Sullivan also played in a slightly different era where there were some small guys, but not even close to as many as we see today. He was a slight player, but still a very efficient scorer at the NHL level.
Phillips would be the smallest player in the NHL (and by far, probably), but he isn't producing enough points in the AHL to make you go: "Wow, what a talent!". It is nothing to sneeze at, or simply shouldn't be ignored or undervalued either. For a player that will have a more difficult time finding different ways to be effective (which was not the case with Mangiapane, Dube and Ruzicka), he simply isn't scoring at a clip that makes someone say that he should have absolutely had a deserving look as a top 6 option by now when compared to the start of other players that Calgary developed.
I know it is a very unpopular opinion, but I just don't think he is an NHL'er. I hope he is. I want to cheer for him, especially being a local kid. I appreciate his motor and tenacity. I appreciate his fearlessness, his willingness to play physical, and his determination on defence too. These are all good things. I just don't think that he is simply talented enough to be given a top 6 role, and for as long as the NHL is a physical league, there will be better options for the bottom 6. I love this kid. I really do, but I think he is unfortunately a tweener. I hope he gets a really good look at some point soon, and I hope that he crushes it and becomes a great NHL'er for many seasons.
I just have my doubts that he makes it, and it isn't just because he is small. It is because he is small AND that he doesn't produce enough points to off-set his size.
