I actually do wonder if McDavid for Bedard might work in an alternative universe.

Edmonton loses the best player in the world but they might lose him completely in a few years. Bedard will be cost controlled and an asset they can likely keep for a decade.

Chicago gets McDavid alongside some of their other pieces. They can fill out the rest of their roster easily as an original six team. I also think McDavid in a market like Chicago would be MASSIVE.

Doesnt make sense for Chicago. Pay 12.5m, then pay 16m x 8? Seems pointless. McDavid could also leave the team if the rebuild isn’t going smooth. Too big of a risk for Chicago, pick the franchise player just coming into the league and establish your team around him.

True. Bedard might bust though, which is a risk.

You are picking him in hopes that he will be close to as good as McDavid.

The chances that Bedard busts are around zero, unless he gets a career ending injury.

I guess in this case bust could mean that he "only" turns out to be a 40-40-80 guy not a 100+ point superstar, but Bedard is not going to be a Yakupov or even a RNH. He is on a different level of prospect that the run of the mill #1 overall pick.
