Or maybe she just likes the little people.

Yikes. I really hope there's never an earthquake of this magnitude in Istanbul if we're talking similar lax building standards there too. It's an absolutely massive city in population (15 million) and land area, and I remember even far-flung outer neighborhoods being densely packed with the similar style of buildings we see in the news today. The potential for devastation there is on a completely different level.

Istanbul is a ticking timebomb and likely all the construction since then will need to be re-examined or rebuilt at the cost of billions of dollars, which Turkey can't really afford. Erdogan is currently rounding up all the developers to scapegoat, despite him masterminding all this. He'll also be the one impeding any rebuild efforts (because he doesn't want involvement highlighted). Electorates should have zero tolerance for corruption when it is small, it ends up getting people killed.

Pretty clear example of what the "Zoning Amnesty" fees have done. In Adiyaman, the Cultural Centre was built to EU standards, because it was eligible for EU funding, compared to the Town Hall, which had applied for the Zoning Amnesty, right across the street

The Town Hall before the earthquake

Is there a 'Sunglass Hut' in the Town Hall?

Thoughts prayers to all the people who have suffered. Does anyone recommend what organizations are good honest to donate some money to the victims?

Is the death toll still around 40000? I figure it's risen since then.

edit: 47000 now
