I'm not sure why shooting and hitting the goalie anywhere, especially "on the mask" should be considered as "probably should've" goals?

I can't believe they lost to the Edmonton Dumpsterfires and then bounce back and win against a team that is actually good this year. What a great effort, GFG!!

Even though we played well against the Oilers, we didn’t make life difficult for their goaltender. It appears we corrected that to a degree last night with more traffic in front of the net.

It's unsustainable success but it's fun to watch in the moment. They need to find a better winger for that line going forward.

I'm going to stay in the mushy middle on this one (shocker)
Lucic isn't the answer and we all know that. He also more value than you're willing to admit or able to see.
But for whatever reason the top three lines have had the best consistency and chemistry we've seen all season and I get why they're not changing it.

Two posts though...those go in and it's the exact same score
Also more than one PP helped considering they scored on #2

Well, from my perspective it appeared that that they were both dangerous shots, one of which I was certain would to go in, ergo he was unfortunate to have not scored. Did you see the shots I was referring to?

There is no fan base across any professional sport that has less knowledge of their sport, associated players, and other teams than Edmonton Oilers fans. Those mouth breathers are 100% clueless.

The one I remember was off the side of the mask... probably half and inch from going it. Close in my books too

I did not watch the game last night but I just took a quick glance of the recording and it looked like Huberdeau played on the RW right? I think he was playing LW and Lucic on the RW the other games.
I bet Huberdeau is playing RW so that it gives more options for who plays on his LW, be it Ruzicka or Dube down the line

That's my view.
But what was the point? They play better in front of Vladar? Or they don't and Vladar would have better numbers if they played the way they play in front of Markstrom?
The actual numbers
xGA60
Markstrom 2.38
Vladar 2.51
SCA60
Markstrom 26.0
Vladar 28.3
HDA60
Markstrom 11.0
Vladar 0.7
Overall I'd suggest they play better in front of Markstrom but it's not a wide margin.
One interesting thing ... Vladar has had the tougher average opponent (taking into account home and away win % by opposition).
Markstrom .564
Vladar .623

That truly does change a team's potential strategy in their own end (now I think Smith is an example where we saw the occasional great play and quite a few gaffes, to the point where we wished he'd just stay in net).
I bring up that example because it's one obvious way a particular goaltender, in his puck handling style, can affect the whole team's positional game. Now, carry this on, we've seen Markstrom bobble the puck behind the net and get robbed a few times now, going back to that egregious goal some 18 seconds into the game against the Oilers in the playoffs. I think quite a few of us have had some "Just tend the goal" thoughts about Markstrom. Vladar is more conservative or more careful, or just simply better at it maybe. So that's a worry the defensemen might not have with Vladar.
Another vast difference between Vladar and Markstrom that I see, and have no stats or anything to back it up, is a style difference. Vladar goes down early and stays down long. This makes the bottom of the net impenetrable, his weakness is mobility and higher shots because of this. Markstrom is more mobile but he's also not covering quite as much low down as Vladar often does. So scrambly play in front of one goalie might be less common or less worrying than in front of the other, the defense might have an easier time predicting puck movement... I dunno, but they are very different players and that yields very different scenarios on the ice, something the skaters have to react to.
So I don't think it's crazy to say the team looks or plays different in front of one goalie or the other, I think it's a natural result of the play tendencies of each guy. I don't buy the narrative that the Flames are super scared to have Markstrom in net and totally comfy with Vladar. They are different guys is all.

That's a surprising disparity in competition. I don't think there's much to read into it since some of it was timing based when Vladar had a stretch where he was starting as well as back to back scenarios. Clearly Darryl isn't worried about starting his backup against good teams which is a contrast to the old days of Kipper where the backup goaltenders rarely got any rope.

This is pretty accurate based on what I see. Markstrom is a hybrid goaltender with above average puck handling skills while Vladar is more of a blocking goaltender with limited/competent puck handling. Defences have to play to each one slightly different.
Theoretically, Markstrom's style of play should facilitate the offence a little better for the D, while Vladar's style of play will offer more predictability for the D.
