Well there was. Moving Lucic.
And it sounds, based on a couple of insiders on here, that it was close.
Too bad it couldn't happen.
But I consider this to be a win-win-win.
Monahan gets a fresh start
Montreal gets a producing Monahan to flip at the deadline
Calgary gets Kadri
No losing party here. Win across the board.

Even when Monahan was good for us he hardly played great against top competition. He made it back on the PP which is good but the line was never really a strong 5-5 line. He just has never had the speed to really match up. Ideally he’s a number two center on a team with weaker forwards but Kadri is a way better player than him now.

Monahan was good for the Flames, but I trade a late 1st+Monahan for Kadri every single time.
I am always a bit of homer, always have a soft spot for the players we drafted. In the past, I would not trade a first, late or not, + Monahan, our own drafted player for Kadri. But after watching Kadri for the past 2 games, YES, I would do it any day of the week.
Even 4yrs ago all Monahan could do was score in the slot. You could not match him up against other top lines and he would not drive play. Also very slow and just look at the difference now down the middle with Kadri and how he can push the pace and it just makes such a difference when you have a guy like that down the middle. The flames have not had that for a very long time.Lindholm is a good player but just not that type.

Could Montreal flip him to Calgary at the deadline? Or before then, with $$$ retained? I assume trading back with retained $$$ would be a major loophole for cap circumvention, but what about a straight trade once there's enough cap left?

Can't retain to trade back to the same team. Don't think there are any rules about trading him back to the Flames without retention though.
