Great team guy. Great story. But he's no higher than 7th on the team depth chart overall and likely 8th.
If 8th, who do you have him behind? I have a feeling it goes:

Meloche
Valimaki
Mackey

Maybe it was having just finished playing a game but he sounded reserved, or as one person suggested during the broadcast "spent"

I thought he sounded tired and sort of had a "well, what can you do about it" vibe.

I'm not going to read too much (more) into it but was interesting.

The fact the AHL club is now based in Calgary also makes an AHL only deal a possibility.
Or a 2 way deal with low NHL salary and a nice AHL wage.

Right now I would have Mackey 7th.
Which is largely a out-the-ass view.

I'd be thinking one-way deal at NHL minimum, start him in the AHL, bury the cap hit.

Stone has been great to have, great team guy.

Just before his goal, he was blasting pucks blinding into traffic which seems to be an issue with him. He doesn't make the plays available to him.

There's an interesting wrinkle to this which is if he signs a one way deal, he'd have to go through waivers to go down. Which could expose him to risk of being claimed. And if he's only willing to be in Calgary that could be an issue.

So it could be that he signs an AHL only deal, and then if at some point, the big club needs him, he signs a new NHL deal at that stage.

I assume that would be allowed?

Yes but I believe he would have to pass through waivers to sign an NHL deal after that.

On the way up or if he goes back down?

I believe on the way up. I believe if you sign an NHL deal midseason after having already played in another professional league, you have to pass through waivers.

Is that similar to the Ryan O'Reilly situation?

No, I don't think so, but I'm just remembering Harri Sateri signing with the Leafs last year at the trade deadline, immediately going on waivers, and being claimed by the Coyotes. And he had to be waived because he had signed from another pro league.

I'm not sure if that applies to the AHL or not, though.

Stone is a great player who always steps up with lots of energy during a call up. However, when he's relied on for lengths of time, he always looks worse. He's not the best skater. He doesn't have the highest hockey IQ.

Great #7 who can step up into the lineup, as a competent NHL. He's not adding anything in the lineup full time. He'd also be taking up a spot that should be used to develop prospects. With how deep the Flames defence is, they only need the #6 to playa pretty minimal role. Providing that time to Stone seems like a waste.

I think it’s probably a situation of Treliving waiting to see what cash he has left. Remember Thornton in SJ just getting paid whatever the club could afford after everything else.

Meloche has really impressed me in the pre-season. Smart and simple plays. I can understand now why the Flames signed him.

Stone's shot is just ridiculous...NHL goalies can't stop it and if it hits them they can't contain it. Nearly every time he gets a clear shot it either goes in or they get a great rebound. I know he isn't the best elsewhere but he also isn't bad...boggles my mind this guy isn't a regular NHLer.

I don't think it really matters because if the PTO guys are on the roster other guys are in the AHL

League min guys taking spots should be good for the cap no?

IF he signs a deal and goes through waivers, he could just pull a Perry and say if he is claimed he will retire. What team would go against a players wishes if he if putting family first and it is just to the benefit of Calgary.

He has to go through waivers regardless. One-way or two-way does not affect waiver eligibility.
