So after hearing about the supposed improvements to SN Now, I did some testing on my phone and TV. The phone appears to be 1080p/60fps, but the SN Now Android TV app is still 720p/30fps. Guess I'll be chromecasting all of the games I watch from my phone, would be nice if Sportsnet's app developers got off their asses and updated the TV app to simplify things

Yes, the resolution for Android TV is 720 unfortunately. Here is the list of resolutions on different devices:
AppleTV 4K 1080P
Chromecast 720P
FireTV (newer versions) 720P
XBox One and newer 1080P
Playstation 4 and newer 1080P
Samsung TV (>2018 ) 1080P
Android TV 720P
Google TV (same as android TV, but....not) Not available yet
iPad 1080P
Android Tablet 720P
iPhone 1080P
Android phone 720P
Web browser on PC 1080P
This information comes directly from Rogers.
So yeah, I dunno why they don't support proper 1080 across the board, but they don't. So pick up an AppleTV 4k for your TV, or get the app for your newer XBox or Playstation if you have one, and you'll be good to go at 1080P

I'm probably the exception, but I've definitely warmed up to SN Now. I'm using an AppleTV 4K so the quality is pretty much identical compared to NHL TV which I had last year. Did back to back comparisons over the summer when they gave SN Now Premium for free for NHL TV subscribers. There were some weird image glitching issues when I first started using it, but it seems to have went away and image quality is top notch now.
There are some good, and some bad switching to the service. The good, the interface is actually much more responsive than NHL TV, scrubbing through timeline, +/- 10 seconds is instant. If you start an event using Live, you won't get access to rewind/fast forward/scrubbing. The trick is to use the restart event option, which lets you fast forward back to live to restore those functions.
The bad, the interface sucks for looking up historic games. Single row, and just scroll away, and ends with the March 2022 games. Really miss the NHL app calendar view. My kids oddly enough remember very specific games high scoring games that they like to rewatch before going to school in the morning, so that'll take some adjustment for them. It'll be interesting to see if NHL app still carries the condensed games, on tight schedule mornings, they watch that instead so that'll still work. It doesn't have them for the pre-season games, but all of last years games is available in the ~9 min condensed version.
Additional content wise, the SN Now Premium preview over the summer gave us access to MLB games, and I started watching baseball to test the streaming service. What do you know, I'm actually enjoying watching baseball and turning into a fan, so that's a bonus. I know you guys make fun of WWE, but my kids love it, and I subscribe via Peacock previously because it was cheaper. So this consolidates my costs. WWE archived shows are even more of a gong show than NHL unfortunately. Only 10% of the entire WWE/WWF library is available, and they've been promising fixing that for years now.
For even more "savings" I've been able to watch on 3 TV's at once in the house without issues (the 4th one gives an error). Their terms of services says only 1 device, while their FAQ says 2 devices.
https://www.snnow.ca/support/watchin...ce-at-a-time-2
Overall, it worked out for me. Saved me some money, got me into baseball, so we'll see how it goes throughout the year.

The app is ####. I'm in Japan. Have to sign in every time I click out to watch a video. Then half the time I get load errors for the videos. I paid for this #### (and with the yen tanking against the USD more than normal) and am none too pleased.

I had the NHL app years ago, more recently I have had the basic sportsnet now. One of the features I used to love was the ability to choose your camera (I often watched most of the game using the behind the net glass camera which was really cool because you heard the arena audio feed and when the puck went in the other end it was like you just took a stroll to centre ice to watch the play). With the NHL app now being the premium version, does anyone know if it gives the option to choose your camera? That alone would be worth the extra $$$ to me.

Have to agree with all of this. For those of us that spend time outside Canada, there is no reasonable way to legally stream even if you’re willing to pay. Would love to just buy a package and maybe use a VPN or register a device to the account. Sadly, it’s pretty much impossible so you’re forced to stream in whatever way is possible. It’s getting that way with all streaming services (Netflix, Prime, Crave, cable providers, etc.), not just sports and live TV. The regional/country deals that are struck with entities like the NHL or entertainment distributors are simply forcing people to work around the rights holders. At some point I would hope that the people in charge of these deals realize that making it easier to pay for a world-wide service will make them more money. I pay for full-deal cable in Calgary, so SlingBox was awesome but their servers go offline Nov 9 as they’re selling streaming services now.

I am curious as to why Sportsnet was given the monopoly on legitimate stream services for the NHL. How much money did the NHL take for it, and was it more than what the NHL could make running it themselves? I am guessing there were solid business decisions for doing it, I was just wondering what the numbers actually look like. With the shoddy service SN is providing, the NHL should be getting on their case about it already, otherwise they are going to lose in the long run as more and more people just turn to pirated streaming (or just give up completely).
The previous version of NHL Live seemed to work well enough, so I don't think it was a decision because they felt another company can do better.
Personally, I haven't used the mobile app yet. I have only streamed on my PC and the app on my firestick, so I haven't had the major issues people are describing. My main issue was having to get firestick rather than just using Roku like I used to, plus nitpicky things about navigating their website to find what I want. I am not a really a sports fan in general, I only like hockey. I hate having to weed through baseball, basketball, and WWE in order to find hockey. There might be a way to customize it, but I haven't been able to figure it out if there is. I also miss the features like how NHL live would flag events like goals and scoring chances in the stream so if you missed something, you could easily skip around.

The weird thing about NHL Live was that Rogers ran it. Why kill it just to roll it into your own brand (SN Now) if you're going to make it worse feature wise? Why not call it SN Now NHL and just leave the service alone otherwise? That bugs me a bit. I mean they no longer have home/away feeds. Finding the games is sort of confusing etc
Just to add, my own experience with the actual product while watching games has been positive. Frame rate is good, image quality is good. No audio issues. Its pleasant. It just feels unnecessary to have it part of SN Now. It would have been better to have it reversed. SN subscribers got their local games in the NHL Live app.

Same with Premier League. DAZN had all the whizzy quick-nav features, but it’s FUbo now in Canada and their service is way worse than DAZN. Seems like every time there’s a change, features are lost.

SN Now still has this but is hidden by default - the button beside the subtitles opens it. It shows goals and start of each period on the timeline.
Though oddly enough they only show up once the stream has moved past an event, so if you want to see all the goals on the timeline you need to first advance the stream to the end of the game and they'll show up. Its kind of weird but i dont mind as I generally watch the games delayed so dont want it to spoil anything.
This is my first time using SN Now after years of using nhl.tv or various pirate methods. Decided this year i couldn't be bothered with vpn/dns work arounds etc so would just pay up. So far have been pretty happy with it - had no loading errors or issues with the streams others are mentioning.
Quality is decent enough, though its annoying and makes no sense the xbox app gives higher quality than the Firestick 4k Max that could easily handle it

Had issues with the SN feed last night so I gave a certain Mario Lemieux themed streaming site a go. 1080p, 60fps, no stuttering or buffering, and best of all no digital board ads. Now I'm thinking of cancelling SN entirely and giving a pirate site $10/mo for their premium service because their quality is so much higher than the legit streams

Where do the pirate sites get their feeds from that they didn't have the digital board ads? Looking at the highlights, both Sportsnet and Altitude had them. How can the pirates get a feed without them? I thought they just stole the broadcast feeds.

I think that Sportsnet has an agreement with NHL TV (or similar) to use their broadcast, but without all the extras. So you get the hockey and pbp, but no panel at intermissions, post game, or digital board ads. So it depends on which broadcast the pirates use. You can search around to find whichever suits your taste.

I'm still getting this error using NHL.tv over VPN. Used to work like a charm in past seasons. Not sure what to do now to watch games in Australia now. I guess we're supposed to get ESPN+ but it doesn't seem to carry most Canadian games, so as a Flames fan, I'm screwed for options. Thanks NHL.

They appear to use the international NHL.tv feeds, which don't have the digital board ads because those are always targeted to the local feed
