So if the arbitrator's award is whatever % over the QO, the team can walk.
If the team agrees to the arbitrator's award, Tkachuk has to take it (or be void of contract I assume and suspended for the year or however those rules work).
If both agree to the arbitrator's deal, then he's a Flame until next summer where he'll be a UFA, and the entire season's really awkward...
OR, they agree to a long term deal and either keep him or trade him eventually.
That about the sum of the circumstances?

So if he doesn't sign long term the Flames basically have to trade him immediately? What a fricken summer that would be, losing both Gaudreau and Tkachuck.

They can still trade Tkachuk to another team before arbitration without a contract in place.

Pretty much. Just takes away Tkachuk's option to sign his one year QO and find a trade partner.

Better than losing another top 2 player on your team for nothing.

Team cannot walk when they initiate the arbitration, only if the player initiates the arbitration. Other than that it looks correct (not that the Flames would walk even if Tkachuk had initiated the arbitration)

They can also trade Tkachuk as a rental during the season. Tkachuk near the deadline with 50% retained might well be worth more than Tkachuk without a contract today.

If Tkachuk did not accept his QO the Flames and Tkachuk would have negotiation period until such a time that they lost his rights by turning 27. Sure he would need to hold out, but they would have years to negotiate.
More realistically, if he did not accept his QO they have the remaining summer through pre-season to negotiate.
Now they have just a couple weeks before a contract is thrusted upon them.
So it could be the opposite, that it’s limited their negotiation period.

They probably knew Tkachuk would hold out into the season, so they gave him a new deadline
It wouldn't be very smart to sign his qualifying offer and risk losing millions in his next contract after getting to play next to Johnny. Matthew is a business man and I think he may have just gotten out-businessed.

Well yeah of course but talk about gutting a team, losing two 100+ point players. Can't remember that happening before.

I don’t feel like it’s time to panic yet, but then againduring the negotiations with Johnny I was optimistic until he announced he was going UFA. Now I no longer trust my judgment when it comes to panicking.

I don't agree with that. If you can trade Tkachuk to St. Louis or NJ with their intention to sign him long-term, he will return much more than as a rental. It's actually not even close.
The Flames simply should not sign Tkachuk for one year.

Yeah but I guess his value would be higher the earlier they trade him.

This pretty much seals it that Tkachuk is done with Calgary.

I'm assuming he has no intention of signing with anyone long-term at this point. If that is the case, St. Louis or New Jersey or anyone would only be trading for one year of his services, and that year at full market price. If that's the outcome, they might as well wait for his remaining cap hit to come down.

The Flames are the only ones who signed that 3 year contract that summer with a prominent RFA who have been unable to subsequently ink a long term deal with the player.

Well, for Point, he did win a couple cups in the interim which may have changed his perspective. Werenski’s deal bought 5 UFA years which I suspect is a little lighter than Tkachuk wants.

The more I think about it this just incentivizes a long term deal, I don’t think that players enjoy actual arbitration hearings at all. You wanna leave this team in a year? You gotta go through this crap.
