It's nothing to get upset about because it can be buried in the AHL, it's just that coming off the loss of the best UFA on the market to sign an absolute unknown minutes into free agency, predictably will cause an over the top negative response.

It's a giant meh. But not something to get upset about.
It’s just because of the Gaudreau situation. People overreacting.

Feels like a Lewis/Pitlick signing from last year

It cost us a pick just to get rid of Pitlick on an expiring contract, so I guess just... why?

Fortunately we probably won't be needing the cap space.

Last year it was $1.125.

Not sure what it is this year.

But if you assume a slight uptick say $1.175 then then sending a player like this down would only leave the difference on the cap.

$1.3 - $1.175 = $0.125

Very low risk depth move.

If so zero risk move for free NHL depth.

Not sure why anyone would get but hurt for a move like this.
Not butt hurt by any means but this reminds me of most of our 2020 signings... Simon, Nordsrom, Leivo, Nesterov, Rinaldo. A bunch of depth guys that didn't provide any depth. Hopefully this will be the exception like Lewis last year.

It's an annual ritual.

Flames always sign first a depth guy when free agency opens.

This is where we constantly go wrong, give the spot to one of our youngsters. Please don't say we have not got somebody who can play 4th line centre for 4/5 mins a game. Absolutely rubbish if I was the owner our GM would be having an interview without coffee. 1.3M for somebody know body has even heard of.

It is a very low risk move, but why make it on day one of free agency. This seems like a player that would be there a week from now.

That's generally in the range of what these kind of guys make, yes.

I think these kinds of moves might be more commonplace with the AHL team being in Calgary next season. You can move these guys up and down with very little difficulty.

Meh. At least it’s not a drastic overpay out of panic. Welcome to the Flames Ronney

Roles exist in the NHL.

You need people who can play the penalty kill, you need players who can hit, players who can score etc.

Rooney is coming in the be physical and PK. This doesn't affect any of our AHLers who are NHL ready.

Ruzicka, Pelletier, Phillips are all more offensive forwards who would likely be better suited for a third line role.

Sutter likes roles and Rooney has a role to fill in a Sutter run team.
