I can think of one more idiot directly related to this post.

Why? Several players have said they're motivated to play good this year because it's an olympic year.

Drew Doughty came out and said he worked hard this summer because it was an Olympic year. Not like that's a negative unless you spin it that way.

Yeah it makes no sense that Sutter would be unhappy that Valimaki wants to play in the olympics.

Only 3 seem to come up for me. Dirty hits from Reaves and Lowry (suspended for 2 games for the hit), and one from Nemeth. I don't see so many examples that it appears to be a problem.

Largely makes sense except the Rangers already have a pretty full pipe line on D. Not sure they need Juuso. Value wise it makes sense but fit wise it doesn't.

Yeah I think it's well accepted players love their country more than their team, as it should be.

If I had a chance to play for team Canada I wouldn't trade that for an 82-0-0 season.

For all you know Valimaki is the hardest worker in practice already, and still being ignored.
Does that sound realistic to you? Really?

The head coach would.

I don’t even think that has to be it. There’s no evidence Valimaki prefers his country and doesn’t care about the Flames record as much.

Plus, Sutter’s not stupid. He knows players can have two different goals at the same time. It’s not binary.

Valimaki wants to play for the Flames and he wants to play in the Olympics. Those are complementary, not opposing goals.

For all you know, Valimaki is coasting in practice doing starfishes in the corner, and still being ignored.

I guess Sutter is an idiot too, then, for actually playing Zadorov. Or do you think Treliving is holding his family at gunpoint somewhere?

Pictures. It’s always compromising pictures in these situations that explains the weird lineup choices.

Not sure why that matters? Even if he does it really means nothing aside from Russian D is very thin. He is still a bad defenceman.

You decide based on what you see from zadorov

But Sutter plays with the hand he is dealt with

I think it's likely that Valimaki works plenty hard in practice, just as I thought it was likely Kylington and Bennett worked hard in practice in the past.

The "practice habits" narrative is always one I find dubious at best. Guys aren't going to be lining their teammates up for open ice hits or blocking shots with their face. So what more can they do? Skate harder? These guys skate harder in-game than some of the more lackadaisical roster locks, yet I'm supposed to believe they dog it in practice?

And I get it - sometimes players practice longer after everyone else is gone... the ol' Jagr special. What proof do people have that Valimaki isn't one of those guys?

The reality is that "work harder in pracrice" is an empty statement usually used to justify poor coaching decisions.

If management didn't bring in a 4 million dollar veteran defenseman who is arguably the 8th best D on the roster yet the fourth highest paid, we would not be having this conversation.

If I'm not mistaken, Sutter has access to Valimaki and Stone and they are also in the hand he was dealt.

I don’t know, I’m not the coach. He obviously has a reason, so I’m not sitting over here assuming he’s doing absolutely everything to the coaches liking and not playing.

I'm not sure it's about hard work necessarily. based on what Sutter said about Kylington earlier, it was about concepts and positioning he either wasn't getting or was forgetting. Stuff we as fans don't notice because it's away from the play or just too technical. We notice an end to end rush or a nice pass. We don't notice being at the boards when they should be more lined with the dot, or vice versa, or when they didn't back off in situations when Sutter had instructed that.

I'm not ready to call Sutter biased or an idiot. He certainly has preferences for vets, but that didn't stop him from playing Kylington when he felt he was ready. And it's only recently he's demoted Dube.
