Of course, if the U.S had any chance of winning in court they would not have released her with some phony plea deal. She was in the same boat as the two Michaels.

The obvious difference being she did the crime she got arrested for, no matter how common it may be

She was living in a Vancouver mansion for the past 3 years. Yeah, exactly the same boat.

Hyperbole is fun!
I have no idea what is going on in Xinjiang (something for sure) but you can't just trust the news in Canada/US as being 100 % honest just like you can't trust the news here either.
For example last time I was in Canada I watched a CBC documentary investigating Xinjiang. A lot of the Chinese was translating either incorrectly or changed slightly to give a different feeling compared to what the Chinese person was saying. For example at one point they were at a child's birthdays party and they were singing the Happy Birthday song in Chinese. It's the exact same as ours except it is in Chinese. But the subtitles said the children were saying "Long Live the Communist party"
I have no idea what the two Michaels were doing but when it possible that they were spying. Just like China Canada has spies as well.

Guy probably posted a scathing review initially but had to edit the post once the censors read through his message - lest he be sent for "re-education"
Thats the sort of thing you'd read on r/sino subreddit

I meant held for political reasons. 0 chance this happens at all if Trump wasn't president at the time and stirring things up with China.

China is a hell hole and so is North Korea. I would never go there the same way I wouldn't take my wife to Saudia Arabia and expect she can drive like she can in Canada or have the same rights as we are afforded in Canada.
China has concentration camps and North Korea tortures, kills and poisons its citizens. What kind of person would have a business promoting such a horrible country?

Nobody is idolizing any of the people involved in this. You’re not arguing with anyone.

Not just on r/sino but all across social media, youtube comments, news comments, etc. There's always the subtle or not-so-subtle Chinese flex or thinly veiled defense.
I knew Michael Spavor personally at the University of Calgary and he was just a regular nice guy who was really into Korean language and culture. I can also see just how much Chinese state-sponsored apologetics or thin-skinned Chinese nationalism is out there when I see it. There are armies of people who take everything said against China as a deep personal insult and will defend their lack of freedoms to the death all across the internet. They also hijack accounts or purchase accounts with posting history and karma to make it appear more legitimate. It runs deep in my family and it's also why I have also decided never to step foot in China again.

It’s such a strange false accusation / insinuation because isn’t China friends with North Korea / always propping them up anyway?

This conversation would improved greatly if we admitted that Canada has bugger all influence on either the US or China and as much as I dont like the Liberals they did what they had to do to walk a tightrope between the two super powers, allowing Meng to live comfortably in a mansion meant that only two Canadians were locked up instead of 10 or 20 with a few executions thrown in for good measure
