I'm looking forward to breaking my Monahan jersey out of the closet again. I'm not giving up on him yet. I remember when people thought Backlund was too fragile to stay in the NHL.
Monahan's had bad luck with injuries, but he's as pure a sniper as any player on this team, and one of the better players in the league at finishing chances in close. If he's close to 100% he's going to do well.
I agree on the finisher part. That’s what he’s good at.
Monahan had a good start last season because he was making good passes and setting up Gaudreau. He'll never be the dangling, fancy passing centre that some people covet. But he can be an effective playmaker. He just has to avoid deferring to Gaudreau all the time.
That said, I would have liked to see a Mangiapane-Monahan-Coleman line. I think it could be very effective.
Be nice to give Gaudreau a faster center. So he’s not waiting in the other team’s zone for players to catch up.
Listening to Sutter is really calming. No panic or knee jerk stuff this year.
Sutter and Tkachuk both say the same about captaincy. I think we as fans put a lot more stock into it than the team does.
Tkachuk is a very intelligent guy IMO. He knows what to say, that's for sure. He said a couple interesting things about the traditional Flames slow start, his post whistle stuff and having a guy like Coleman on the team.
Gaudreau actually lets slip more about on ice stuff than most - he obviously disliked the RW carousel, and it seems like he recognized his late season surge was a little puffed up. Monahan likes the idea of Mangiapane on RW (I snickered at how he said Mangi plays well on "both sides of the puck").
I wish more people had asked about D pairings. aside from the obvious answer about missing Gio's minutes, there wasn't much.

Really, a lot of Flames players are good at interviews nowadays. Tkachuk is very well spoken. So are guys like Coleman, Mangiapane, Markstrom, Dube, Johnny and Backlund.
They've come a long way from the Brent Sutter days in which guys like Bouwmeester, Kipper, Jokinen, Bourque, etc. were frequent interviews. The team really leaned on Iggy in that regard.
Guys like Tkachuk and Markstrom are also particularly insightful. It's nice when not all of the responses are vanilla.

I think Darryl will help mature and calm these guys down to a point where the confidence ISNT going to falter.
The mental side of the game is really where this team has struggled and I loved Darryl putting Francis in his place .....NO there NOT familiar with ME .....they are familiar with winning.
Darryl removed EGO from the equation 100% in stating that to Francis . Sure he wants to win the Stanley CUP but Darryl knows damn well he is just directing, managing, recommending and mentoring his players , coaches , scouts , Agms, etc.
Knowing your systems, culture, linemates, team mates and coaches intimately is going to help this team immensely.
I'm very excited to see a different approach this year. I hope for the players and organizations point of view they embrace this , adopt it, believe it , eat , drink and sleep it......this can be a refreshing change rather than just concentrated hatred of the past using confirmation bias to just be down and negative and pessimistic about everything .
So glad puck drop is soon. So glad Darry is back with great assistant coaches as well in Muller and MacLean.

Johnny’s come a long way - his interviews used to be terrible and full of verbal tics. However, I still think Monahan is the better answerer in general (and Gaudreau seems to defer to him a lot).
So awesome to see clips and interviews again.
I'm really excited for the season to start.

Agreed. Darryl could sell me anything.
On another note, I do remember past camps with Gulutzan and Peters amd Ward and wondering why on earth the team was not down to their lines earlier in camp to get chemistry going. Didn’t make sense to this outside observer.

Hearing Monahan's injury happened on game 6, is very encouraging. I thought it happened much later in the season. He was great in the first 5 games, then he just kind of faded away. I thought that he lost a step. I really hope he can stay healthy and play at a level close to these games.
I also really like the Zadorov - Tanev pairing. And the fact that the coach means business straight out of camp. Hopefully everyone would be able to build chemistry rather quickly. I mean if Mangiapane can play on both ends of a round puck we're in pretty good shape.
I guess I don’t understand why the org would keep playing injured Monahan instead of shutting him down. Especially if it happened that early.
There’s prior history of having him play hurt too.
For lack of better options?

Sam Bennett was right there and was coming off a great post-season. He was pushed down the lineup for absolutely no reason.
Geoff Ward was a garbage head coach.

Thank God Tkachuk called out the 800 pound gorilla in regards to the poor starts here.
That stuff doesn't go over his head and he's not afraid to say it like it is.
A good year starts with putting yourself in a position to succeed, being a few games over .500 in October and not having to scramble later on to catch up.
Can't remember the last year they actually put themselves in a comfortable spot early.
And how nice would it be to plant that seed of doubt in No Good land right off the hop?

Tkachuk should talk less and let his play doing the talking. Really mixed bag of an interview by him
He was a really good 'talker' last season.
But I'm willing to put it in the rear view and move forward with a fresh slate. Just show us a good, take no prisoners Matt Tkachuk more often than not.

Just wanted to add how good it is to see Darryl on the ice. I still have questions about this team, major ones, but glad we have taken a big one off the table.
