No, he is a regressing overpaid 3rd line C we should be trying to shed. Also, what exactly have the Flames accomplished since Backlund joined the team? He is part of a losing culture, why on Earth would you make him Captain? I mean yes, it would be such a Flames thing to do but I would rather we move away from that direction of mediocrity.
You keep using buzz words but really don't prove a point or discuss things rationally.
Why do you think Backlund isn't captain material? Being quiet isn't a legitimate reason.

He has already stated his reasoning. He isn't a good player and overpaid.
As for being captain material. He has been a core member of a team that has won nothing - a leader on a team that has a very low give a crap meter on the ice. He also disappears for long stretches of a season when he plays like hot garbage.
No one knows what goes on in the locker room but I think its fair to say a new leadership group is needed. Personally, I am glad Giordano is gone and Backlund should be next.

You're missing the point, it wasn't at all to do with exposing Gio, it's the lack of succession plan as far as fans can see.
I’m missing what point? You have no point. We have no idea what internal discussions have been had. The announcement will involve a press conference, the players aren’t even all in Calgary yet. This is a ridiculous take.
Are you actually saying that team management is sitting around right now saying “holy ####, why didn’t we think of a captain?! What the hell are we going to do!?!?”
Not allowed. Vancouver did it with Luongo but it couldn’t actually be official on the game sheet. And he didn’t have captain rights vis-a-vis officials.

I cheer for the Flames to win. I also have no trouble looking at the team and its members objectively.
This forum has a lot of people who have good conversations about what seems to be working at what doesn’t, and discussing potential reasons
Well, I will agree that it is possible to have a reasoned debate between fans about the team, and I also agree, or at least I used to agree, that CP is a good place to have it, but last season and this off-season it has become increasingly difficult to take this place seriously, especially with the completely outlandish takes being spewed out daily.
It feels like a race to the bottom most of the time.

Focus on the best posts and the best posters, and ignore the weaker ones. Makes for a much more enjoyable experience.

If the Flames are having a captain this season (I think we should just have 4 A's) then Backlund is the obvious choice...
1: Great community guy
2: Plays a 200 foot game
3: Already has a letter
4: More familiarity with Sutter then most on the team
5: most tenured Flame on the team (man... I feel old now)
6: Captained his national team
7: Plays a mean sax

Tanev was my vote for the C, but Backs does seem like he bleeds the Sea of Red more than anyone else. I think that his wife and him would be devastated to be traded away from here.
Backlund is a great choice. If the bar we are setting is that the player cannot be someone who disappeared for stretches at a time, well then not a single player is going to be captain, as every player on the roster is guilty of that.
I think how well their fit in the community is an important decision too. It's a good PR look when the Flames are part of a community event and you see the Flames' captain on the front page photo op. Both Iggy and Gio were amazing pillars in the community. Backlund is the same as well. He would be a fine choice.
Also only half-joking when I say that if making Gaudreau captain gets him to re-sign again, then make it so.

No, I don’t think fans have a clue of the leadership within a team.
Interesting. Watching the RedWings in the 90s and 00's, you very clearly knew the leadership of that team was, and which players everyone followed. Same with the Avs, Pens... Hawks, Kings... in fact, I would argue that on every championsip caliber team you can pinpoint who's leading, who's following and who isn't following.
With floundering teams like Calgary, I can pinpoint who should be leading, who is trying to lead, who is following the right leaders, who is following the wrong ones and who isn't following anyone.
We may not know what's going on in the room, but we can see what's going on on the ice and hear what they're saying in the media.

C of Red.
Yes, it's a play on words that means "sea of red," but it is 100%, quite literally, the C of Red.
Edit: On a side note, how sad is it that we can't just say "literally" anymore? Now we have to explain that we "literally" mean literally and not "figuratively" mean literally. Or, in the should-be-immortal words of Leona Lansing...
