Oh now you admit he is a good player after all the spouting you did while he was here? Sometimes players do better when given the right opportunities. Hate to see Ryan go.

Don't you have a locke of Bennett's mustache hair to go sniff or something?

What an insufferable subject on this board lol.

At this price point it’s a good deal for Edmonton but he was overpaid here for what he brought.
2018/19 Ryan was clearly better than a "decent 4th line guy". He was a 40 point player with great hustle, leadership, and defensive awareness.

Last year, he looked like he had lost a step though. Turning 35, I don't think he is the choice going forward. It sucks to see a heart and soul guy go to Oil that's for sure.

Same guys who will slam the Flames for falling in love with players and not parting with them will be complaining in this thread about letting Ryan walk I bet.

Ryan was ok, but I don't think he will be overly missed. I am glad that it looks like they have decided to go with a bigger bottom 6 and be tougher to play against.

Hope Ryan has an ok finish to his career while the Oilers keep choking.

Everyone sucked last year so it's hard to say if Ryan lost a step or if it was just an overall decline.

For his sake, I'm glad he was able to get a two year deal and hopefully he doesn't take the inevitable vitriol personally...

Wow so after years of hearing Ryan was over-utilized we've come full circle.
I would say he was appropriately utilized.
And I'm a fan of the guy.

Ryan was given more opportunity here than most especially when Peters was behind the bench.

This is a nothing loss and I am glad we didn’t sign him to this deal. I way rather have size and snarl in the role Ryan was going to fill here

Was a very good bottom 6 guy for the Flames. Even jumped to the 2nd line for parts. 2x1.25 is great value for the Oilers.

Yup. If you want to make the team bigger and tougher, replacing Ryan with Lewis at a lower cap hit is a pretty cheap move in that direction.

If we are going to bring up Bennett in this discussion, then I will change my argument to: "I wish we never signed Derek Ryan to begin with, and had Bennett take his 3rd line minutes to develop properly. Who knows where that would have gone?"

Derek Ryan was a fine player that did a lot of things right. In the end, Calgary didn't win with him, and that's ok. We don't have to love or hate Ryan, and we don't have to miss him or be happy he is gone.

In my opinion, I don't see room for him in the top 3 lines, and he isn't going to score much off the 4th line anyway, and I would prefer a heavier and faster team. Hope he rips it up on the Oil, but I hope the rest of that team sucks next season. I will only 'sort of' miss him, but at the same time, be happy he isn't on the team, as I like the Flames forging an identity again.

I believe the Flames got two really good years from Ryan, he was full value.

I think he is still a good player, is getting paid what you would expect for a guy his age, and Edmonton signed a decent deal to get a very good reliable player

I also think he has more opportunity for good ice time there over here

It’s a good fit for him and ideally not a big loss here

Treliving is lying again, they prefer to spend a pick and more cap for 1 yr of Pitlick than resigning Ryan

That’s how much they want him

Not sure about the long term aspect for the oilers, however, with their window being now, reshaping their d, Hyman to the top6, and adding some forward depth with Ryan and foegele, seem like at least a reasonably better team than last year.

Interesting that they didn't address the goaltending at all.

There is that tiny detail of the 5 year age difference…

It’s clear that the Flames want a 4th line that can grind you to death in the playoffs. A 35 year old Ryan would not fit that bill.

I’m sure Treliving would have signed Ryan for league minimum as a utility player who you could plug in as needed, but that’s not the deal he signed for.

Well now they have to buyout Koskinen or make a cap space dump trade, with only 1.2 million in cap space and an arbitration coming up with Foegele and they still need to sign Yamamoto, they need some room. Lucky they have that arbitration buyout window coming if they can't get a trade done.

Probably closer to 8M in space still.
