If the Canucks buy out OEL it's about a $2.5M yearly cap hit to 2033 (though this years hit is a lot lower and next years way higher).

THAT'S your bar?!

... Let's put it this way, if the Coyotes retain $3M, this will be a huge gamble. If they don't, it's just Eriksson all over again.

Around here, it's known as the Oilers bar.

What this does do is free up cap so other teams can't offersheet Petterson and Hughes. Losing the 9th overall also hurts.

I just don't get it. The rid themselves of some bad contracts with a year left with this trade, but they gain another albatross for nearly the same for 6 more years, and they give up the 9th overall to do it.

Arizona are not ####ing around. I don’t think we’ve ever seen a team so aggressive in using cap space to load up before.

Benning is desperate to save his job. Anything more than 1-2 years in the future is meaningless for him.

With the OEL retention, they're essentially shedding Eriksson's contract which they will likely end up filling a lot of with Connor Garland so Cap wise it's a wash.

Well put.

Canucks fans will salivate over next near with Garland adding skill and tenacity and OEL still being serviceable, while dumping all that roster waste. But with each year it will get progressively worse for them to the point of being ugly.

Good thing they're in a contention window-

Oh wait..

It doesn't really though!

All of the players rumoured to be headed to Arizona are worth a combined 12M AAV. Let's say the above tweet is right and they get OEL for $7M per season instead of 8.25. Then they have Garland, who according to Evolving Hockey should sign for about 4.75Mx4.

This would mean they'll have saved less than a million in cap. This of course doesn't take into account the ~$3.5M they could have saved just burying all of those guys in the minors for this season (though obviously they would have to be replaced on the roster so net savings is perhaps more like $1.5-$2M, but that's still significant).

Garland needs a new contract though.

They are also getting a pretty good forward in Garland

I'm stunned that the 9th overall was included. Holy. Nice trade for Coyotes.

The more I think about it the more I like it for the Yotes. They will be terrible anyways, they’re building assets and should pick high again next year and the year after. If they play their cards right they could actually have a good team in a few years.

Very interesting move to say the least. Hard to chose winners or losers until we know what the pick becomes.
