Does not feel like enough for the Flames because it is quantity over quality, but for the Blues they would not give up the assets like these because they still view Tarasenko as a solid top six player.

Opens up cap room and helps to fill that middle six with an upgrade in youth, speed, and talent. Excellent depth can be better than a single great player.
This deal is closer for me for sure but I would likely want the first to be 22 or 23 instead of this year.

Not sure why Washington is doing this? They obviously wanted Mantha.

If they want Tarasenko, they can deal directly with St. Louis.

This isn't even close, IMO. That Schenn contract is not appealing whatsoever.

I’m asking for ROR. If not him then we can trade Tkachuk elsewhere to a team with more appealing assets while the Blues wait 2 years.

I wanted ROR 3 years ago when he was still 27 and had 5 years left on his deal.

Now he's 30 and only has 2 years left before you have to extend him to a deal you will start to regret pretty quickly. Trading Tkachuk for him should not be an option.

Yeah, if there's any piece I want from the Blues, it's their 2023 1st round pick.
The Blues could conceivably collapse by then.

And it would be nice to have another chance at Connor Bedard and Michkov.

I would do that too.

At this point, we have seen what this club can accomplish with even a healthy Monahan, so I'm all for taking a risk in dealing him.

I just don't know if Monahan has any appeal for the Blues. Other teams will be suitors for Tarasenko.

Flames are not in a place to acquire a declining 29 year old 7.5 million dollar player for one of their only young assets. There would need to be a 3rd team involved to some degree to make any sense.

He is 7 years older than Tkachuk and turning 31 next year. It doesn’t make any sense for the Flames and it makes more sense for Tkachuk to play his 2 years here and walk than trade him for a more expensive 30+ player from the Blues.

Schenn, RoR, Tarasenko, are all guys drafted over a decade ago and past their primes.

Schenn is turning 30 in a month and a half and is paid 6.5M for the next 7 years. Absolutely disastrous. RoR has 2 years left at 7.5 like Tarasenko and that is the same amount of control we have on Tkachuk. Absolutely no incentive to make a deal for any of those 3 players.

Sure, but at the same time this is a team that has Sutter at helm, and I’d rather give him a Selke-caliber center who would easily be the perfect 1-2 with Lindholm. It’s worked before with the Kings and Kopitar. And, it would be extremely difficult to matchup against the Flames with a top 3 center trio of ROR, Lindholm, and Backlund. Put Mangiapane with ROR and another two way player on that line (LW or RW) and you’ve got a great shut down line.

I’d want a sweetener for sure, but ROR’s defensive capabilities are better than anyone on this team. We also have to take account that Tkachuk’s new contract is going to probably be 9m+.

But, as we’ve already established for quite a while, we can get much more and/or much better in a trade outside of St. Louis.

Don't get me wrong, I am still interested in acquiring ROR but not for Tkachuk.

I would take Tarasenko if he was basically free. Take whatever combo of young players and picks it would take to get Tkachuk and add tarasenko for free to the package. If he pulls a Dustin Brown it could be a heck of a deal. If there is some Thomas, Kyrou and Tarasenko combo, I would take it in a heartbeat.

People seem to want to do a "Phaneuf" type deal for Tkachuk, and that is just ridiculous to me.

If you trade Tkachuk it needs to be for a similar aged core piece coming back, or a collection of younger pieces that have high end potential to become a core piece. More like the Hamilton deal than the Phaneuf deal.

Flames should not be getting significantly older in any deal including Tkachuk but feels like every proposal on here has the Flames taking back an older piece as the centerpiece of the deal.

I think these deals being proposed are working to force a deal with St. Louis who do not have the assets we would want in return.

I still look at Ottawa as a potential partner. They can’t think that Brady wants to be there long term. Mediocre fans, brutal rink location, and most important a cheap owner who pinches pennies. Matthew is in a city with a better fanbase, downtown rink with a new one on the horizon and an ownership group who spends to the cap every single year.

I looked at it from the perspective of they are going to lose Kuznetsov and need a good pivot to replace him, so that player has to be part of the deal. Mantha is one of the few top players the Caps have where they actually have full control over trading him, and his salary made things balance out. The trade keeps both teams lineups balanced, the caps balance, but the risk for Washington is ugly. I was originally going to target some of the Washington prospects, but the salaries really have to balance out. Trying to come up with these deals is tough because of the many moving parts.

Almost every hockey trade in this flat-cap NHL will involve something close to dollar-for-dollar cap hits. So expect any Tkachuk deal to bring back at least $6 mil in salary. As for the term on Schenn’s contract, by all accounts this franchise is in win now mode. How that cap hit looks four or five years from now is a problem for future GM.

And as much as fans wish it were true, you don’t get everything you want in a trade. But step up to the plate. Let’s see a trade you think gives both teams what they need at a price they’re willing to pay.

That logic is brutal and makes no sense in this scenario. The Flames are better losing Tkachuk for nothing in 2 years rather than take on the Schenn contract.

Imagine how many people would be jumping down a posters throat if they tried to peddle Backlund for a sub 25 all-star? That is basically what you are doing with Schenn

Imagine trading a 23 year old who was out leading scorer at 22 and scored 34 goals and 77pts as a 21 year old for a 30 year old who scored more than 58pts once in his 10 year career and had 7 years with 6.5M per left.

Ottawa make no sense. Their top two forwards are both LWs. Even if Stutzle transitions to C, it’s not as though Brady and Matthew would ever play on a line together. And Ottawa face the same flight risk from Matthew if they can’t sign him to an extension.

Their rebuild is already going well. They’re under no pressure to accelerate things and make a big trade. St. Louis, on the other hand, were supposedly poised to make a shakeup before their late season surge.
