Where he is from is totally irrelevant for drafting...it would have been a good pick obviously but it wasn't a flames specific mistake considering 29 other teams also passed
Including twice by the lightning who took dominik Masin and Jonathan Macleod in the second

TB also passed twice, proving they were also dumb, just not quite a dumb as everyone else.

Those "OMG we passed on this guy" proclamations are dumb unless it's within reason. For example "The Flames passed on this guy at 11 overall when he was highly rated and went with this other guy instead way off the board and he busted".

Sure, fair game. But the whole "The entire NHL passed on this guy twice and so did the Flames so how stupid are the Flames, am I right?" is just silly.

The feeling of Tampa getting beat is nearly synonymous with us beating this pandemic.

Feels goodman.

Go Isles, vanquish that evil.

Lol, how come they are giving the Flames a free pass on passing on Mark Stone in his draft year? Shouldn't they be equally as outraged on letting him slip to the 6th round?

Watching the over powered Lightning get shut out for most of a game is bad hockey??? I thoroughly enjoyed today's game thank you very much. Varlamov played outstanding and Islanders played a great team game. Every one buys in similar to Vegas and I'm cheering for that final.

I still can’t believe we passed on Zetterberg 9 times and only ended up with NHL games out of Saprykin from that draft!

The Isles are what I think the Flames envision as a championship style game of hockey. So buckle up Flames fans, if you're into flashy dazzle puck instead of grind and trap , you're in for a bad time.

He was passed over because of his size and I get that but he was also projected to go early 2nd round, One scout said: "It’s an absolute shame that Point’s stature – 5’9″ and 160 pounds – will reduce him from being an absolute slam-dunk first round selection, Point is a very good skater. He has good top end speed, very good acceleration and a quick first step. His agility and edgework are both very good, and his balance and strength on the puck is surprising for a player his size. He skates with a low centre of gravity and is very tough to take off the puck when he has it, and he can be gritty and win board battles due to this good balance. He plays bigger than his size as a result, throwing hits and being gritty in all three zones.”

Listen, the 13-14 Flames were way down the list in scoring so one would think the organization would draft some scoring talent instead of the three amigos that they did in rounds 2 and 3.

It's not likely the other 29 teams had scouts watching this kid since AAA bantam leading the Bison's in scoring but I'm positive the Flames/Hitman scouts did and I doubt 29 other teams scout the WHL near as much as the Flames.

When I saw the name Brandon Hickey, a low scoring AJHL Dman from Edmonton of all places and committed to play in the NCAA I almost barfed on my keyboard, not because I knew Point would be an NHL star but because I felt he had a far better chance to actually play. Massive failure to pick a dud like Hickey over Point, I'd be interested in knowing how many CP'ers were as disappointed that day as well.

Let's be real here, we're in for a bad time regardless.

Picking gems in your own backyard should be an advantage. Can't say that 29 teams saw Point equally.

Teams have scouts everywhere, own backyard is irrelevant...tons of players light up lower levels and never translate.

Philly should have drafted Gaudreau I guess

Picking guys because they are local is how you end up with Brent Krahn

It isn’t when you’re in a market that is hard to attract free agents and retain talent. Lean towards people who have roots locally if it’s close between two picks.

Except when you have the chance to draft Tim Ramholt instead of Shea Weber.

How boring were the Minnesota Wild up until 2015?

I'd go with a big win for the Isles. Last year's series, it was the Lightning getting the big 8-2 win.
