No doubt goaltending has been bad, but results are measured in wins and losses and nothing else.

It's great that the Flames are attacking 55% of the time but when that attack amounts to a toothless tiger its nothing to brag about.

Edit: goaltending has been poor, but a team that struggles to score more than 2 goals a game doesn't get to use that crutch.

Re: Bolded

That's... not true. Coaches are evaluated based on the "results" in terms of outplaying other teams. Even cliches like "effort" are part of the results that coaches bring. Hockey is a sport with a lot of volatility in the other areas that result in wins and losses. A team can defend better and create better scoring chances and score less and get scored on more, and win less, and another team can defend like crap, and only score on random bounces from far out, and get more wins. The latter team is not better-coached.

From what I've seen watching the games the amount of times the Flames have outplayed or showed more effort than the other team falls very much in line with the wins and losses in their record, plus or minus a few games.

You're right that the offense has to lead to goals, but it's clear that it took a while for the coach and the players to adjust to each other when it comes to team offense because it was really bad during the period when Sutter first took over.

Leaving out the final 4 games vs Vancouver for obvious reasons and choosing April 6 as the turning point because Sportsnet listed that as the date that the Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk line were put together, from March 9 - April 5 the Flames played 14 games (5-9-0) versus the 12 games (7-5-0) from April 6 - May 12 (5v5 numbers and North Division Rank):

Corsi:
54.29% (3rd) --> 55.42% (1st)
Shots for per game:
23.4 --> 23.9
Shots against per game:
21.4 --> 18.6
Goals for per game:
1.71 --> 2.17
Expected goals for %:
53.9 (3rd) --> 59.8% (1st)
Shooting %:
7.34 (4th) --> 9.06% (4th)
Team Points %:
0.357 (7th) --> 0.583 (4th)

Powerplay
Overall:
18.3% --> 13.6%
G/GP:
0.57 --> 0.38

The Flames 5v5 play improved significantly over time including their offense. If they maintained the 2.17 5v5 Goals for per game played pace, they would have scored 121 goals and come in 6th in the league.

On the other hand, I think they should consider making some changes to improve the powerplay, personnel and also coaching. It's one area of the game that remained mediocre even when the rest of their game improved. Overall on the season they had the 21st most effective powerplay and gave up the 2nd most shorthanded goals (7).

Oilers Lose

Canucks Lose

Flames Win

This, my friends, is what's known as: "The Perfect Night"

(My final use of this for the season...<insert sad emoji>)

Sure, but the Flames never improved because they never improve. They will never accomplish anything because they never accomplish anything. And their true-blue loyal fans, who hate the team like poison, deserve better (because reasons), so everyone must be fired into the sun to appease them. And then the people who fired those people into the sun must be fired into the sun, too. It is known.

This is the place for over-the-top, non-stop toxic negativity, not for facts or reasoned discussion. How dare you mellow our harsh?

Invest in the future always. You have the right cup winning mentor coach behind the bench to facilitate this.
One could easily make the argument that this is the coach that loves his Nordstroms and Fantenbergs.

While I believe that the cap and the outright skill levels will mean that Mackey, Gawdin, Kylington (depending on his...location) and maybe Ruzicka and Kinnvall will play somewhat significant roles on next year's team there is no way Sutter goes into the season without Ritchie, Nordstrom, Stone and Rinaldo (as popcorn eater) or their equivalents.

After getting into only a handful of games this year I would be surprised if Kylington resigned in Calgary. Flames may well qualify him but he would be better served playing in KHL or some other league where he can get consistently into games. I wouldn’t be surprised if both Ritchie and Nordstrom are offered new contracts to play here next year. Sutter seemed to like them and it would fit his pattern of young guys having to beat out veterans for a job instead of being handed one.
