Wow, that RW position looks brutal on paper.

Leivo, Dube, Simon, Nordstrom.

Nothing about Nordstrom's PK numbers in Boston actually suggest he's an elite PK'er. They just suggest that he's played a lot of PK minutes but that he's likely average at best.

Out of 8 forwards who've played 40+ minutes on the PK in Boston over Nordstrom's 2 seasons there, he ranks:

- 1st in TOI/GP
- 2nd worst in shot attempts against per 60
- 3rd worst in unblocked shot attempts against per 60
- 3rd worst in shots against per 60
- 4th worst in goals against per 60
- 3rd best in expected goals against per 60
- 3rd worst against in scoring chances against per 60
- 2nd best in high danger chances against per 60

Basically, he was good at suppressing high danger chances but overall wasn't that great of a PK'er
"He's really good at the one most important thing PKers are supposed to do"
should have stopped the post there tbh.

If Leivo stays healthy and hits his potential he's going to get 30 points, and if Dube grows then it looks way less bad then you're making it out to be. No doubt our weakest position though. Lindholm playing on the RW really bolstered the group.

He ranks 44th in HDCA/60 among forwards throughout that time and ranks 90th in GA/60.

Not exactly a world-beater on the PK and definitely not worth sitting out a significantly better player in Ryan (unless it was for cap reasons for a significant trade)

Nordstrom, among B's F's, had the most SHTOI per game played for the 3rd best PK in the entire league last year.

Fancy stats....he "wasnt that good" at PK though.

Ok, but Nordstrom is on the roster and he is going to play games this season. Ryan will as well. They may even play in the same game. Repeatedly banging on about why Nordstrom is in the lineup is pointless. He's here; he is going to play.

It's done by design though to have better balance on all 4 lines. You could move Lindholm and Mangiapane to RW in the top 6 and our RW would look better but then the team isn't as balanced IMO.

The Flames have set up 4 "pairs" of forwards that just happen to be LW-C pairs:

Tkachuk-Lindholm
Gaudreau-Monahan
Mangiapane-Backlund
Lucic - Bennett

Then the idea is that the RW position will rotate through the lines leveraging Dube, Leivo, Simon, Ryan, and Nordstrom.

Honestly it's an interesting approach and I think we will see a lot of different permutations of moving the RWs around the lineup based on how things are going.

30pts in 52 games for a top six winger is not very good

False

That works out to 0.58 PPG, which would have landed him 37th in the NHL among RWs last season and is pretty much a 50 point pace over a full season.

If he can do that without first unit PP time then that would be great production, and right in line with what you'd expect a top 6 RW to produce.

Has anyone seen confirmation that Ehlers is in/out? He was in COVID protocol yesterday.

If our biggest problem is that we are frustrated with our 4th line winger, we're doing just fine. There will be issues that arise throughout the season and Doc will get his fair share of playing time. It's GAME #1. Let's relax and enjoy the ride!! GFG!!

The really great thing is that I have very high expectations for the Lindholm, Monahan and Backlund lines. I think they all look great. Its a small thing in the big picture that my hopes for the fourth line are not to get scored on a lot. Hopefully, Ward just doesn't play them too much.

It’s not our biggest problem, it’s just an unnecessary one

Biggest problem is teams figuring out our two biggest offensive weapons and their perceived lack of ability to adjust or contribute positively when they aren’t scoring

Agreed. I think Simon would be great with Bennett and Lucic as the playmaker.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Leivo
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Dube
Mangiapane - Backlund - Ryan
Lucic - Bennett - Simon

If you're rating him based on these stats, High danger chances against per 60 is arguably the most important.
