The #1 target should be the guy with 3 shutouts in the 2nd round

Sorry, I messed up. Sorokin. From the Isles, I always get those two mixed up.

Ship sailed in that draft. I know you're just being a bit snooty with this post but yeah, thats some egg on the Flames face a la the Hunter Smith pick.

Doubt he moves either.
Greiss is a UFA, Varlamov isn’t that young, and Trotz has always loved having two goalies he can trust. In Nashville, Washington, and now New York he was always a guy that wanted two strong goalies.
So yeah don’t see him moving.

Would anyone object if we gave Markstrom 5x5?
I don’t think I would.

If he is willing to take 5x5, he won't become available.

Markstrom will cost $7M-$7.5M on a 5 or 6 year deal I'd imagine.
$7M x 5 years? Yeah, I'd probably do that. Either that, or acquire someone notable via trade (Kuemper would be my first choice). Matt Murray would be cool to get IF the team truly believed he could bounce back (I'm not sure he can - but at 26, I certainly understand the desire to see what may happen).
It is time to fill the #1 goalie position. Then let Rittich play his 35 games a season.

Coyotes were first in the league with Kuemper in net before his injury. Why would they be interested in getting rid of him?

Friedman speculated/spoke of Kuemper as he believes Arizona is looking at going the Ottawa route of rebuilding. Specifically mentioned Kuemper.
With no first and second round pick this year, and no first round pick next year and rumours of them wanting to cut cap (OEL), it adds up. I imagine Arizona will bottom out and spend the year selling assets.

Interesting. Would be a mistake, I feel, by them to do that. Not easy getting a capable starter. 4.5M per is a nice contract too.

Is it just me, or do other people get jealous about another team getting a lottery level first round pick from a team that implodes organizationally? I always hoped that the Flames would be able to do that one year.

Haha. The Flames are more likely do be the one giving away the lottery pick.
In fact they almost did in 2018 when they gave the Isles their 2018 1st rounder at the 2017 draft for Hamonic. That pick ended up as the 12th overall and Carolina won the lottery with the 11th overall pick, moving up 9 spots to get Svechnikov at 2nd overall.
The Flames are always asset poor. They're never the team trading assets they have an abundance of to get extra 1st rounders. The only time they've ever had more than one 1st round pick, or traded for a 1st round pick was in 2013 when they finally did a rebuild.
They always hang onto their assets until they're either worth nothing, or walk away for nothing because they are always "competing" lol.

It is kind of crazy to see 2 big Ottawa trades that had that result. The Sens are in OT game 7 of the ECF vs the eventual cup champs and then move their chips in the following year on a 27 year old top line C. They completely implode and gift the Avs the 4th OA pick in the draft.
They then tear it down trading franchise Dman to the Sharks with a future 1st as part of the deal. The Sharks go to the 3rd round of the playoffs and lose to the eventual Cup champs. The next year they completely implode and gift Ottawa the 3rd overall pick.

That kind of seems like the type of team Treliving would like to trade with.

Nope. Markstrom is too old for a deal like that.
A career 91.1% goalie is not going to progress. Especially not when he's about 33 years old during the midst of a huge long term deal.
I don't even think the Flames should look at anyone older than Lehner. Why would we trade Gaudreau for youth, and then sign such an old goalie? It would be foolish to have the "contender" mindset in net, but the "retooling" mindset for forwards.
I would rather just keep Talbot and Rittich than have MAF, Andersen or Markstrom on team-ruining contracts.
In fact, I don't think the Flames should acquire anyone over 30 in general. Not in any position. And if they do, don't give them much money and don't spend much acquiring them.
Players should progress, not regress. Young players rarely have bad contracts.

Talbot and Rittich is about as average/unimpressive a tandem as you can have. For as good as Talbot was (our defence was solid and we did not allow a lot of quality chances), he fell apart in an elimination game and lost the most important game of the season for his team. When the team is banking on him as the starter in the playoffs, that just can't happen. It exposes the tandem for the mid to bottom tier pairing that it is.
There's a year and a half difference between Markstrom and Lehner - so, assuming Lehner signs a 6 year deal and Markstrom signs a 5 year deal, it's a wash.
I'm definitely not on the side of this team absolutely needing to pay for Markstrom or Lehner - but I am on the side that says this team needs to improve the tandem it goes with. Heading into the next season with Talbot and Rittich again would be a mistake in my eyes - they are just not a good enough pair.

I have a funny feeling that our new goalie will be somebody out of left field-somebody we haven't been discussing.

I want them to bring in Dustin Wolf
I feel he is going to be the NHLs version of NFLs Tom Brady
In tears at the draft , playing with a chip on his shoulders to prove to everyone he was ghe best and the best CHL goalie In the draft
