Being rude in private communications, that’s the charge. Not demeaning a black player in front of his team mates by dropping N-bombs, not psychologically torturing another human being for professional gain, being a ######bag jock in an Instagram chat.

The moral isn’t even “don’t do that”, it’s “don’t do that when you’re expendable”, because we all know this would not end with a contract termination for Ovi or Backstrom.

And this is in no way me defending anything that was said, there’s a lot a gross, reprehensible, indefensible verbiage to contend with.

But let’s not act like damaging discussions don’t exist in every one of our pockets.
Sorry man but your baseline for getting a contract terminated is incredibly low. Those things you listed would not only get you fired but also likely get you charged and perhaps even sent to jail, and no one here is even remotely asking for that sort of outcome.

Leipsics contract was up and the Caps didn't renew it, the Capitals have zero obligation to renew a contract if they don't want to, especially when they have proof of a guy being not only misogynistic loser but a PR nightmare. And they don't have to worry about Ovi or Backstroms contracts because these guys didn't do anything like this, believe it or not some professionals actually behave like professionals.

I will add that plenty of people in jobs that are way less high profile than the NHL have had their contracts terminated for far less egregious errors on social media. I know a person who was in line for a high paying position for a municipality and after they offered him a contract they found a post on his facebook that was somehow interpreted as demeaning to overweight people, i saw it and it seemed innocuous, however obesity is a disability and you can't do that in a municipal environment so they terminated his contract before he even started. This happens to lots of people for actions that are far less egregious than Leipsics, never mind the fact that Leipsic just isn't a very good NHL player.

Personally, If I was running a company, and one of my employees admitted to doing illegal drugs, called his coworkers losers, made fun of their wives and girlfriends and made derogatory comments towards women, I certainly wouldn't want him around anymore and definitely wouldn't renew his contract.
Seriously, who needs that kind of liability and presence around my company, especially if the employee isn't very good at his job?
How the information came to light is really irrelevant at that point, it's out there and you have to acknowledge it.

Why are you comparing crimes for which you can be arrested and imprisoned with being fired for saying things embarrassing to your employer? Sounds like you're the one blowing things out of proportion.

And it's equally pretend to compare "off color" or "damaging conversations" with demeaning women and treating them like disposable sex toys? That's toxic to yourself, toxic to women, and embarrassing to the people associated with you.

And it's not "expendable" its just cost benefit to your employer. If Ovi did that he'd be in #### and face supplementary discipline. Which probably wouldn't include contact termination, because his contact is still probably a plus to his employer. Leipsic's contact wasn't worth much, and he made it become negative with his toxic comments -- which you yourself admit was "reprehensible".

As for what's on my phone? Whatever anyone my find offense with, it won't be because I called random women fat sluts. I guess that makes me a teatotaler.

Nobody wants their private communications read. And people Have the right to say things others might not like. For starters, they have that right anyway, and they especially have it in private settings.

If you resent people stomping their feet about that, put your information on the internet for us all to view and judge.

Or is that a supremely unreasonable ask? And if so, why?
Sounds like you are having a reckoning with yourself in public here. Almost everything you said is strawman.

Perhaps you should calm down, step away from the keyboard, and think to yourself if the person you are in private is so embarrassing to the person you are in public, perhaps you might want to make the person in private a better human being.

I'm surprised by the number of people I've seen all over the place admit to having said equally awful things in private.

I certainly haven't, and I can't think of anyone I know that has said anything similar.

It doesn't have to be equally as awful to be damaging though.

I will share a personal experience.

I once had a business relationship with someone that I didn't know too well at the beginning. He was introduced to me by a mutual friend. To make a long story short, I was broken into and ripped off. I confided in a mutual friend that I suspected him at the time because of some weird coincidences and that I didn't know him that well.

Several months went by and the mutual friend and I had a personal dispute. She then took the text chat and sent it to the guy. By this time, I had a good relationship with the guy, but he was so hurt by that, he pulled out of the business and caused me quite a bit of financial problems.

Maybe I am jerk. I didn't outright blame the guy. I was just musing on the possibility at the time (it actually ended up being an acquaintance of that guy, so the suspicions weren't outrageous).

Perhaps my post about this entire situation wasn't communicated as clearly as I should have communicated it and some poster's might have taken this the wrong way. I personally set the personal conduct and treatment of others as sky high.

Poster's on CP don't personally know me but pretty much all my family and friends would describe me as a great guy. "A gentleman among gentleman" " A loyal, honest, trustworthy and true friend" etc. I am not trying to blow my own horn here, just that I am a good person and I don't support rape culture or some of these other accusations because I don't or maybe I do have a daughter?

If the goal of the world is to start making this a better world , a substantially better world and a ton of progress on everything from racism, sexism (both male and female) environmentalism or any other progress or anything else than we better start to get ****in real in every aspect. Business, money, politics and power be dammed. Let's quit the BS and the fake outrage over everything and everyone and let's get down to work and business. Make the sacrifices

If Brendan Leipsic is a POS human being, he didn't become one in just 1 group chat. You want to change NHL behavior, let's just see how far and wide the NHL's new code of conduct will actually go in this instance?? Suffice to say, if personal instances and behavior from every single NHL team he played for are not brought to the attention of the NHL with heavy fines and loss of draft picks, than it's all BS. Nevermind the dollars and the draft lottery, let's root out the problem!! Let's put the fear into other NHL players that they shake in their skates. Let's make an example out of teams and players so the rest of them fall right in line!

Anybody remember Donald Sterling, the owner of the NBA Clippers? What really happened in that instance? Remember the NATIONAL outrage of racism? The debates, the yelling, the protesting? He sold his team for $2 billion to another billionaire, a
multi millionaire bunch of NBA players did a "silent protest" by turning their shirts or tracksuits inside out? Did anybody really eat the economic sandwich? Has anything really changed with racism in the NBA or America? Honestly? What about Colin Kapernick and the NFL? Any real changes in football or society/racism?

Akim Aliu and Bill Peter's. Quite the story the NHL and the Flames had this year. Bill Peter's get's paid, Flames continue to do well, NHL has new conduct policy (wait and see how far it goes) Peter's get's new job in Russia and Akim Aliu says he believes in 2nd chances. Fine, great for all involved. Has it really solved anything?

Feminist and environmentalist Justin Trudeau: Railroad's how many female's during his time in order to keep corruption and power? Just recently switched to drinking water from plastic bottles to "drink box water bottle things"

Rupublican's in the US: Preach Christian values, fiscal responsibility and a hard no on drugs!! They are flat out racist and have non stop mistresses all around, running up the debt like you and I buy coffee and probably do more cocaine and have children smoking put than anybody. Classic political BS!

Democrats: The party of female power and and champions of the metoo movement! Anybody really calling for Biden to step down or is getting Trump out of office the higher priority? What will they do when Old Joe, who loves to swim naked in the presence of female Secret Service agents? Don't believe me? Look it up.

Literally how many public people have been ashamed, banished, ridiculed, railroaded, fired, fined or whatever during the last 15 or so years with social media and comments or photos etc? What about anything else that's been on the internet or in the news? How much progress are we really making with all this outrage? Are we interested in fake apologizes and the status quo? Or are we interested in moving things forward?

Brendan Leipsic is a nobody of concern and this outrage won't solve anything. We will probably just continue the circle of freaking out, making people apologize, people will probably battle it out on twitter and facebook and that will be it. Nothing materially important will actually change with sports, politics, business, power or society. That's just the way it is.

It’s not even like the people involved can pretend much of it was said in jest or was meant to be humorous. Instead it’s just hateful.

Pointing out that every single one of us doesn’t want our private messages available for public consumption isn’t a straw man.

It also doesn’t mean that we all have things in there as bad or worse as Leipsic. People have nudes, dirty messages, personal opinions that may not even be inflammatory, just things they don’t want in the public eye.

Finally, there’s a decade’s worth of posting on this site alone that should make it clear how I believe people should be treated, and I am not on the same page as Brendan Leipsic.

Reckon with yourself.

I don’t disagree with anything you said, and I think I miscommunicated what’s bothering me about this. Because it isn’t that the dude lost his job. And it isn’t because I think deep down he’s a good guy.

Having your private information published without warning in a non-criminal or non-legal situation isn’t something anyone deserves. It doesn’t matter if they’re rude texts that reveal you to be a world class buffoon or nude selfies from the iPhone of Jennifer Lawrence. It’s a profound violation. Period. It’s a practice that should be actively discouraged.

Now, are these messages themselves a violation? Well, certainly now they are, since Herr Schrodinger has entered the chat. I can only imagine how Tanner Pearson’s wife has been handling this, and my guess is it involves a lot of tears.

So I dunno. Is it justice to humiliate a new mom in the middle of a plague? It doesn’t sound like it to me. You could send those screenshots to Ted Leonsis and sufficiently derail the guy’s career if that’s the motivation. Why release this information in the way that causes the most damage to the most people?

This whole story is unsavoury. We’re tasting different notes.

You're not a jerk, that was just an unfortunate circumstance. She could have just told him what you said -- there's nothing new here. I failed to see how what happened to you applies here.

It's the very definition of strawman, because *no one* proposed to make private messages available for public consumption!!

No one is arguing Leipsic doesn't have a right or expection of privacy. This entire conversation is about what happened after that right is already violated. Leipsic doesn't get retroactive protection from accountability because knowledge of what he says and thinks came from a violation of privacy.

And the right to privacy isn't universal. People leak and whistle blow all the time -- which is actually protected in severe enough cases, when it's in the public interest. All these public figures are public figures -- they have a privileged position that comes with responsibilities that most of us don't have.

I've got nudes on my phone. I prefer they stay there. If my company wants to fire me should my privacy be violated, I'm ok with no longer working for that kind of company. Perhaps Leipsic is ok with no longer working for a company that doesn't like their employees calling random women fat sluts.

Anytime you put things in writing that you wouldn't want the whole world to see, you are taking a chance. I can see speaking in person some things you don't want your boss to hear or whomever, but you just shouldn't put it in written form - whether it be a text, through social media, and email or whatever. If you do, you put yourself at future risk.

I totally understand how the Capitals don't want to be associated with Leipsic. Maybe he can go play for Peters in the KHL where they don't seem to care about character.

On Twitter I spoke out against Leipsic and was accused of needing to relax because I’m not 100% perfect.

Which is true, I’m not, but like you I can honestly say that I don’t have conversations like that with my friends ever. In real life or in private text conversations.

Everyone makes a rude comment from time to time, but not everyone consistently screenshots pictures of random women for no reason other than to call them fat. Not everyone mocks their teammates or co-workers for no apparent reason. Not everyone admits not only to using but loving illegal hard drugs. In fact, I’d say most people probably don’t.

I’d have no problem letting anyone look through my DM’s on any platform I use. I have nothing to hide. People that do need to look in the mirror and think about if what they’re doing is truly normal.

This isn’t just “he said something rude about a woman” or “he said something mean about former teammates”. This is a clear pattern of repeated misogynistic behaviour for absolutely no reason other than to be a jerk.

Quite frankly I hope everyone involved never lives this down. They’re in their mid-20’s for God’s sake.

I don't think that's the case, I am not a very active poster compared to a lot of other's on CP. I can be opinionated for sure, usually with a contrarian view on some things. In some ways, CP for me is really my only online presence for chat and dialogue. In my original post I indicated that I don't have or use any social media as I believe it becomes extremely toxic.

Sometimes my opinions can go against the grain and get other's worked up for sure, I find I am fairly respectful to other posters and I don't really engage or verbal abuse/ put down other posters as some do on this board.

I discuss the topics at hand, voice my thoughts, reactions or opinions like many others. Sometimes I get likes and sometime's people don't like. Nothing really earth shattering here.

So, what's the deal with that Portland Winterhawks team? 2013 they make the Memorial Cup, lose in the final to the MacKinnon Mooseheads. That season their leading scorers were Ty Rattie, Brendan Leipsic, and Nic Petan, each of whom put up 110 - 120 points, and none of whom were able to seriously stick in the NHL.

I don't know much about the source of this article, but I think its a pretty good representation of hockey culture.

Quote:
“We did the same things, we said the same things, but there was no way to get caught,” Hull said on Sportsnet’s “Hockey Central” on Friday. “We can go out after games, we can go to strip clubs, we can go to bars, and we could do whatever we wanted, and it would all be hearsay.”
https://deadspin.com/old-hockey-man-...nev-1843375816

I have worked with a lot that grew up in that culture - many of whom played junior hockey and some pro including in the NHL. While I won't paint them all with the same brush, in my experience, many have the same attitude. While some have outgrown the culture, some continue to perpetuate and act like they are 18 and a big shot hockey player.
