Does the story sound like she was sleeping on the job?

Jiggled door handle startled her.

Security guard on high alert surprised by door handles, didn’t see or hear group of drunken guys (the stealthiest, usually) tiptoe up?

Have they posted the video?

It’s also just her side of the story. Not that he’s likely to have much of a defence however the entire story we hear in entirely from the way she perceived it. His friends probably dared him and he drunkenly obliged. Extremely stupid in hindsight with all of the facts out now but I’d imagine most of the people in this thread have done much riskier stuff that never had to pay the consequence like he has too now for his choices.

A few people here need to just stop posting on this topic. Seriously.

It's not her word; the police have security camera footage.

People are making up a lot of "facts" here...

Lost a pickle somewhere?

Could you not see drunken kids more likely to think it’s funny to startle a sleeping security guard?

Did you read the article? The entire incident is quotes of her statement and the only mention of anything being on camera is a man is seen with his pants around his ankles. Again not saying he didn’t do anything wrong here. But we are only being given one side of the story from a person who obviously perceived things strongly enough to pursue legal action.

So far in this thread you have:

Attacked the author of the article
Subtly tried to blame the alleged victim
Suggested Mathews would be better off having tried to cover it up
Threw in a nice little anti US jab

You have some interesting hockey related takes but maybe not every thread needs to have your comments at every third post, especially if the topic is a little more serious. Just my two cents friend.

Attacked the author of the article - sure, Simmons is awful.

Subtly tried to blame the alleged victim - victim? Is there a “victim”? I don’t think disorderly conduct, the appropriate charge, necessarily has a victim. Is she a witness or a victim?
However, as for her ‘sitting in her car and being startled’, was she sleeping? Maybe that made it funnier to Matthews
I also clearly said Matthews was stupid and made a bad decision. Don’t cherry pick, I like to think you are better than that

Suggested Mathews would be better off having tried to cover it up
- I said it was tongue in cheek and put a picture of Jackie Chile’s up, man. Maybe you don’t know who that is.
Tell you what, if a lawsuit for emotional distress follows the disorderly charge, he would take the case

Threw in a nice little anti US jab
- sure. it’s a very litigious society, and apparently lying about observable facts supported by video is good enough for the president.

I seem to confuse you. That’s fine. You can go ahead and use your ignore button

I read the police report. First is the security guards statement, the second is the officer returning to view the video.

Stupid act by Matthews, and he should lose the captaincy. A leader does not do this, this is something a follower does. A dumb one at that.

As for you and your gravy-train of thought on this, don't you have any sort of empathy? Any sympathy for this woman?

I remember a night when I had to pick up my now wife late after work down-town and I got there seconds after some drunk good ol' boys having goofy fun mooned her and started cat-calling. She was alone, terrified and when I got there, she was shaking. She ended up throwing up, she was so scared.

How the hell can you live in this day and age for longer than, say, 16 years and feel that this is something that should be defended?

And no, drunkenness is not an excuse. Youth is not an excuse. Stupidity and/or ignorance is not an excuse, but I'm willing to bet it's a reason in this case.

Matthews is dumb for doing this and if he didn't let the Leafs know about this I'd say that is a good reason to give the captaincy to Tavares.

I don't understand why the security guard was sitting in her car at 2 am? She must have been on the job right?

I also find it funny with all the white knights on here. If this was a male security guard in his car would you still be up in arms? Just because it's a woman doesn't mean she needs protection.

Exactly, does she not think that will ever happen in that line of work?

It's incredible that some grown men think this kind of aggressive and deliberately intimidating behaviour is no big deal. Just a drunk (22 year old) kid? This would have scared the #### out of me. But hey, boys will be boys I guess?

No, I’m not saying that it’s right. But how do you not comprehend being a security guard, police officer or soldier does not come with added risks? Kinda what you weigh before taking on these careers.

People are going really deep on a thread based off of a one sided story (doesn't mean it's wrong though). No one got hurt. Just leave it as another dumb stupid drunken incident... unless more info comes out. If you want to make it a hockey related story talk about how he is dumb and immature he is and how it hurts his captaincy.

Let's lay off of the outrage and moral superiority discussion unless more information comes out.

Generally thanks, but I’m taking this topic as partially serious, where appropriate, and largely overreaction.

Tell you what. Put in a vote on the Tkachuk poll before he signs and I’ll consider your wishes.
