The birds definitely don’t look as nice.

Not meaningfully different enough in price for it to be a differentiator even just for scooting downtown.

So do you just swipe a credit card or something and it takes the money at the end, or do you prepay a certain amount and then when it runs out, it locks the wheels while you're scootering and sends you flying?

It’s an app. You scan a barcode on the bike/scooter from the app and it charges your info from that

Bird scooters should be some of the better scooters out there. From what I understand, the company did something about the 28 day lifespan study and had their own made in China. Some of what I read was unsubstantiated forum stuff, but their scooters are built to withstand heavy americans, have extended range, better amperage. If you wanted to buy your own durable personal scooter, the bird scooters are worth a look.

Coin op. Plug in quarters and ride. They're super noisy though.

I had a Lime the other day that clearly hadn't been emptied in a while. Only got it up to 5kmph; we figure it had to have at least 30lbs in quarters still in there. Probably worth more than the scooter at that point.

I don't know about Bird, but on Lime you have to sign up with a minimum $10 (converted to USD so it ends up being about $7) and it deducts your rides from the balance. I don't know what happens when you run out, but I doubt it will lock the wheels, maybe just cut the power.

This was when the bikes came out, I took one bike ride a while ago and one scooter rider a few days ago. It might be set up differently now.

I walked up to it, scanned it via the app, added my credit card and away I rode. Pressed "lock" on the app when I was done and it stopped and provided me with the total $ it would charge my cc. Cost me $4.20 for a 14 minute ride.

The Birds look much nicer from ~5 feet away (I haven't really used or examined either much closer than that).
The Lime ones have all kinds of dumb stuff bolted on; horns, reflectors, lights, shocks etc...they look like "The Homer"
The Bird ones are sleek and minimal.

Can't comment on performance, and I would imagine that all the stuff bolted onto the lime scooters have a purpose, but from a purely aesthetic standpoint, Birds look much better.

The Bird ones just seem to have a lot more plastic.
