Good bye to the biggest diving goalie ever! He also has the lifetime award for giving up the most 7 goal games.
Some of you forgived him way too early for his funny tweets.... NOT this guy!
However him screwing the Canucks over for $3mil a year has finally made me fan!

Vancouver radio has been spectacular over the past hour:
· Sure, the Canucks have been hit by a cap-recapture penalty, but it's not fair because his contract was signed before the rule-change. It's probably illegal.
· Sure, the Canucks have been hit by a cap-recapture penalty, but it's only $2.2 m minus the $800,000 that they were already paying in salary retention to Florida. So, only $1.4 m for three years.
· Oh wait, you are saying it is an additional $2.2 m INCLUDING the salary retention? So, $3.0 m? ... ... oh ... ...
· Sure, the Canucks have been hit by a cap-recapture penalty, but this won't prevent them from signing Tyler Myers. It likely means they will not be able to sign a lesser defenseman that they were pursuing like Jamie Benn.
· Sure, the Canucks have been hit by a cap-recapture penalty, but they can always just trade a player like Loui Erickson to another team who is looking to meet the salary floor. How about Ericksson + the rights to 2012 former second round pick Alexandre Mallet? Any takers? Anyone?

He was on such god awful Panther teams it's hard to use points percentage against him. Most nights he'd have 50 saves and that's the average shots on goal per game were 22-30.
I wouldn't say that most nights he'd have 50+ saves. 7uongo played in 1,044 games. In those 1,044 career games, he had at least 50 saves in 6 of those games. 2003-04 was the only year he had multiple 50+ save games, when he had two games with exactly 50 saves. One of his 50+ saves performances was with Vancouver.

Imagine how salty they would be if their team was actually competitive and the $3M cap hit actually meant anything. As it is, as a bottom of the barrel team that $3M doesn't hurt nearly as much as an it would to a real contender
Elias Petterson and Quinn Hughes will both be RFAs in 2021. The Canucks will still have on the books:
· Loui Ericksson @ $6.0 m
· Antoine Roussel @ $3.0 m
· Jay Beagle @ $3.0 m
· Roberto Luongo's cap recapture penalty @ $3.0 m
Add to that the possibility of Tyler Myers @ $7.0 m for multiple years, and that is A LOT of wasted cap space.

Many Vancouver fans on Reddit are having a good cry about the cap recapture. My exclusive sources say that many of them are convinced the Canucks could appeal and have that penalty removed since it was a retroactive rule change... even though the Canucks themselves signed off on the change.
Can show this to anyone deluded enough to think the Canucks have a case to appeal.
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said last week there was no avenue in the NHL constitution for the Canucks to contest the cap recapture penalty or grieve the cap charge, since it is part of the CBA.

Kind of funny that a guy I hated for so long would become so likeable in the end.
And he sort of puts the screws to the Canucks on the way out.
Hero.
Even as a Canuck I never really hated him. Sure he played for a rival and I've been trained since birth to hate them. But Loungo was always like-able ever since his first stint with the Panthers. And I can never bring myself to hate someone who backstopped Canada to multiple gold medals at various tournaments.
The recapture penalty is icing on the cake. Best of luck to the best Captain in Canucks history!

He'd be the class of 2022, no? Right now he doesn't have a lot of competition for the HOF.
2020 -- Iginla, Hossa, and then there are guys like Doan and Brian Campbell who are unlikely to get in
2021 -- Sedin, Sedin, Zetterberg, maybe Rick Nash? And then there are guys like Brian Gionta and Patrick Sharp who are well on the outside.
You have the typical snubs like Alfredsson and Mogilny but I think Luongo had better careers than both of them. Of course more people will likely retire after this past season but I don't think Luongo will have any trouble getting in.

Yeah, I think he had an elite career overall, and had great longevity, but had a tough time winning Vezina's playing much of his prime at the same time as Brodeur. Never won a cup despite making it to the finals, and never won a Conn Smythe. Won internationally, but rarely as the go to guy.
I think it will be interesting to see how the voters see him. I could make the case either way.
I hope he makes it in. He was definitely one of the best goalies in the league during his tenure.
2 x 2nd Team All-Star
3 x Vezina nominations, including 9 top-10 finishes
1 x Hart nomination, including another top 6 finish
1 x Jennings Award
2nd All-Time in games played for a goalie (1044)
3rd All-Time in wins (489)
5 All-Star game appearances
10th All-Time in career save % (.919)
3rd All-Time minutes played (59878)
Multiple Olympic, World Cup and World Championship Gold Medals
I think he has the resume to make it. He had the misfortune of going up against Brodeur and Lundqvist during their primes, and doesn't have the hardware Roy did. But you can't use Brodeur and Roy as the bar. Otherwise no other goalies would get in. I look at him and ask; was he among the best versus his peers during his playing time? Without a doubt, he was. And that's what the hall is judged on. How good you were relative to your peers and if you stood out among the best.
Luongo is definitely a worthy candidate of the HHOF. IMO he's tiers above comparables like Cujo or Osgood. Hell, my eye test tells me that prime Luongo was better then prime Lundvist ever was.
If Luongo doesn't make it in, then no other goalie should make it in unless they start challenging Brodeur or Roy's numbers. Luongo has the peak and longevity to get in.
