The entire point of Bulk Barn is that they ship the items to the store in bulk. That costs less money than shipping "pre-filled" containers. That is how you save money by shopping at Bulk Barn.

Oh wait, are people suggesting that the employees fill the items at the store? Don't quit your day jobs, folks.
The suggestion was reusable packaging that you pay a deposit on. Like beer bottles. Instead of using plastic.

I think the bigger issue with the ese of making plastic is that if it isn't recycled, it because an environmental hazard. Sure, if all o fit gets buried it's not much of an issue, but since people are generally inconsiderate, a lot of it ends up blowing away and causing environmental issues. If it is cardboard, it will break down quickly.

A LOT of plastic does not get recycled right now. A combined approach of better recycling programs, and better use of plastics to begin with would probably reduce the amount of plastic waste.

Massive tax breaks and incentives should be handed out to any company that is currently recycling plastic in order to produce another product. HDPE is a good example.

I also believe that you can source cardboard from a recycled source, also something that should be highly prioritized. We should do the same thing with plastics. Or figure out a way to use more biodegradable plastic products.

There is no reason Canada can't lead the charge on this, but like a lot of other things, we suck at innovating as a country and instead spend more time bickering around over who buys beer from what province and if they have the right.

I've noticed most smaller breweries are using stickers, or the plastic shrink sleeves on the cans.

I wondered if it had any impact on the recycling stream.
The bottle depots haven't rejected them yet.

I think quite a few countries combine both systems vs we seem to try to separate it.

For instance, I believe there are some countries that have both recycling and trash bags, but both bags are sent to the same location. Whatever is trash is incinerated and whatever is recyclable is recycled. Recycle bags are also sorted at these locations and the trash in them is incinerated. Thereby, the stuff is properly sorted before it gets contaminated. Anyone who is putting garbage in the recyclable bags get charged more (as a fine or as a cost of the increased work to sort their stuff). However, I think the reverse is true where recyclables in the trash bag is also fined or charged more.

IMO, we should incinerate things and then bury whatever is left over rather than just straight bury things straight up. It takes up less space, takes far less time to break down and assuming it's properly sorted before incineration, allows for a proper system of recycling to take place. But I'm not an expert and I assume there's other issues I haven't thought of in this set up.

Why can't employees fill them at the store? If I pay $5 someone will run around Superstore and put things in bags for me and bring them out to my car.

I think grade 5 students pump out robots in their science classes these days that could fill containers.

You could have X standard sizes of containers that go through an automated washing/filling cycle and get put back on the shelves.

No weighting your containers and having a cashier type in a code for what item you bought, everything could get slapped with SKUs.

Sure maybe it's a dumb idea, but at least you were a dick about it.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will announce steps towards a federal ban on single-use plastics on Monday, a government official has confirmed, following in the footsteps of the United Kingdom and other jurisdictions.
I actually applaud this move, at least in regards to straws.

Im just curios how far they will take it. Pill/aspirin type bottles? Plastic cutlery etc?

Stay away from my Q-Tips though ya bastard.

Seems like q-tips could be at least updated to use some compostable materials for the dowels, whatever that new material is they're planning for cardboard straws.

Banning single use plastics can't come soon enough. I was really pleased when I heard this, and hope it isn't just rhetoric.

Q-Tips already have cardboard sticks.

This is great and all but I bet they still allow cigarettes which have the plastic filters that are apparently worse and far numerous then plastic straws.

The Q-tip brand, but a lot of off brand ones that people just call q-tips use plastic.

I think the challenging one will be drink lids, especially coffee and soft drinks. But if the onus is being put in the manufacturers to figure out how to deal with them, it will speed up the process.
