Assume that Tre has a contract draft already, just need a few numbers to add and it's ready to sign. Ottawa would let Tre talk contract after the trade pieces were agreed on.

Ottawa could grant the Flames permission to talk to Stone's agent if trade talks were that far along. We saw something similar with the Nick Jensen trade-and-sign yesterday.

They would ask Ottawa for permission to talk to the player. Happens all the time.

All I can get
|
Ottawa will want a king's ransom for an impact player like Mark Stone. A late first-rounder and second tier prospects won't do it. They'll want as close to a blue-chipper as they can get. We're talking Juuso Valimaki here.
A roster player, Valimaki and a first rounder.

I love Lindholm but Stone is the better player.
Stone has 62pts +13 on a brutal Sens team while playing away from Duchene and Dzingel.
Lindholm is great, but Stone can produce by himself.

They can want until they are blue in the face. They won't get. But we will.

Frolik definitely makes the most sense. But I'm pretty sure the Flames would have to send more money to the Sens in order to re-sign Stone and Tkachuk.
|
Well, Brodie and Frolik have 10 or so team NTC too, so who knows if Ottawa is on there.

The thing is though, that the other teams (WPG and NAS) are only interested in Smith as a rental. Hard to say what BOS is thinking, but if the Flames are the only team that wants him signed, they would by default have the best offer and would basically have no competition on the offer.
The fact that Treliving is looking this hard at it says to me that the price is tolerable.

Lindholm can also produce on his own. I don't think the separation between them is all that much.

And for fans worried about trading Valimaki, the team loves him. My guess is he is as close to untouchable as it gets for Treliving.

When it comes to team-relative Corsi%, Mark Stone is literally at the 100th percentile in the entire NHL. No player has to deal with a worse team than Stone does, and yet he puts up unbelievable possession numbers, on par with the absolute best.
Some people talk about how good McDavid would be if he were on a decent or good team, but Mark Stone has to put up with much worse on the ice in Ottawa. He'd be an absolute firecracker here.

I would put Stone and Lindholm pretty much on par (this year's Lindholm, and it's new territory for him)
Regardless, with Stone, you're talking about 5 - FIVE - of the top 40 or 50 forwards in the league.

If they do go big game hunting, Valimaki might be off limits but the price will be very high. No Prout, Gawdin and a 3rd... I think teams are very well aware of the youth movement in Calgary.

Imagine how good he could be in Calgary with the quality of team we have and the type of linemates we could pair him with. That is why Tre probably sees this as something almost too good to pass up.

Wouldn't surprise me if Bennett were involved, if Stone is signed. Not saying I'd want that, but I think Bennett could be moved in the next little while.
