We hit the skids while the Sharks were rolling. They'll hit their own skid, likely when we finally find our legs again. Ebbs and flows. I still think when we're not struggling we're better than them and hopefully will finish ahead.

Actually, the Flames have suddenly become the Carolina Hurricanes of the West.
Dominate play, lots of shots on net, weaker goaltending (though not tonight), lose the game.

On to Pittsburgh. There were signs of righting the ship. We are tied with the Sharks for 1st in the Pacific. I can't be to upset but I hope this changes soon. Sharks have won 6 in a row. They are due to lose like we are due to win.

@ VAN: Tkachuk/Monahan/Neal don't score.
@ FLA: Monahan scores, Mangiapane/Tkachuk don't.
Chucky is snakebit lately, but he and Monahan are about our only options.
I liked the Mangiapane choice tonight, he at least tried a deke and to attack with speed, something different than our usual slowly come in and shoot low strategy.
I'd still like to see Jankowski, Backlund, or Lindholm.
|
Lindholm has only had one chance and that was when they went 5 deep eh? Odd.
I really think they do this in practice every once in a while and I suspect Mangiapane has shown some aptitude in those.
You'd think Jankowski, with his shot and also his reach for dekes would be a natural. He could do the Forsberg easily with his wingspan.

I know that 1-3-2 in the last 6 since the break looks bad but think the results are a bit unfavourable. Even if they win both in a shootout and were 3-3-0 I feel like there would be less panic.
Washington: Poor Effort - Outshot 40-30, Washington was the better team, Smith wasn’t great.
Carolina - Win - fine effort.
San Jose - Okay effort - Flames outshot them 38-30, down 3-0 due to a bad 1:32 and two bad goals.
Vancouver - Flames outshot them 47-25, lost in the shootout, Rittich let in one softy and Markstrom was great.
Tampa Bay - Bad Effort - Just outclassed the only truly bad game of the stretch IMO.
Florida - okay effort - Florida did a decent job of Clogging things up on the rush. Flames outshot them 43-32, and lost in a shootout.
Sucks but I wouldn’t hit the panic button just yet. Teams have stretches like this in a season.

Not really. Flames were the better team tonight, and they played really well against the Nucks and Sharks and deserved better fates in all three of those games.
They're definitely snakebitten offensively at the moment. Although they've also had the misfortune of running into some hot goaltenders lately, which is really f'n annoying.

And they actually did hit a couple skids when the Flames were rolling. That's how Calgary got its lead in the first place.

No offense taken. Glad we could work it out. Sometimes I assume that things are obvious when in reality they aren't always easily understood, it's something I've been consciously working on fixing. Cheers.

Hamonic sucked his first year. I would give more patience considering that Neal has been playing well getting chances and being engaged just not scoring. (I know though moral victories are weak).

- Glad they got another point in this slump
- Going back with Smith might mean that Peters doesn't see Rittich as the number one after all, though his decisions to date would indicate he does
- Tied for 1st in the West, the Flames will be alright

And their most recent one was worse than ours is.
I believe they had 4 straight games where they allowed 6+ goals.
Then the break happened which somehow sparked Jones and the Sharks but tripped up the Flames

what part?
i thought the Flames actually looked pretty good (didn't catch the first period mind you)...
sure felt like calgary should have won that game except for Reimer making some big saves...
Smith looking good is also a positive sign

The first period wasn't great for either team. Lots of missed passes and bad entries.
You are right, though. From about midway of the second to the end of regulation the Flames were clearly the better team, and Reimer came up with some big saves to get Florida to overtime.

Actually a better “complete game” tonight than the last couple.
Crazily, this is a big point. I think this was a “building game”.
They’ll finally get a proper practice tmr and improve their play against the Pens—even if they lose that game. What matters now is improvement each game going forward.
(...and also a nice addition from #TheWizard , hopefully...!)

Meh, Smith was good, the offence is sputtering. Saturday is going to be a big night.

I will say it again. The pressure and chances looked weak for the most part sitting behind Reimer in first amd third.
Sustained pressure didn’t seem to be there even on the power play. The shots seemed to be low danger.
In the 3rd they woke up especially after the first goal, but then got sloppy again.
It is a slump for sure. They showed glimpses of their style but fell back to the slop way too much.
Oh and Smith was excellent. Full marks there. Wish he got the W.

Lindholm is 0 for his last 5, obviously Peters has seen them all too.
Janko's attempt vs Tampa was a good one too, if he had shot at the very end instead of the stuff attempt he would have scored:
I think we should absolutely use him.

The most worrying part of this slide for me is that while other teams are ramping up for the playoffs, this team is starting to fall back into their bad habits from last season.
There's a lot wrong with their game all of a sudden. Players are floating, they're taking bad shots and keeping to the outside. They are no longer the hungrier team. They're making a lot of mediocre teams, and mediocre goaltenders look really good.
The Tampa game should have been a wake up call and tonight I was hoping to see a strong rebound. Instead it's much of the same.
On the bright side Smith was really good. Hopefully he can string some games together.
