And I have seen both and think Kylington has been better. I also think that because Stone was better than Andersson, it propped Valimaki up.

There are many reasons to think something. I respect that you think Valimaki was better, but I just haven't seen it the same way and that's not because of recency bias.

Now did Valimaki have some absolutely great moments of his own? For sure. His assist on Neal's goal might have been the best play a Flame has made this season.

And has Kylington had some stretches of rough play himself? Sure, there was a point in early-ish January he was slipping a little.

But let's not call it recency bias. We all just see things differently. Like how you contend 2015-16 Brodie didn't outplay 2015-16 Giordano, but I think he did. If course they are different enough players that one advantage for one guy or one area for improvement for another guy can really influence our perception.

I don't think that is the case with me. Could be I suppose and I'm just not seeing it... however my litmus test is that I truly would rather retain Kylington and Valimaki than lose either of them... in almost any scenario where our trade opportunities and our decisions on who to protect make any sense... to me at least.

I get the impression from the posts that these two guys are "good"... maybe even "promising" but nothing exceptional.

It is that issue specifically and only that issue that has my attention.

I see just about everyone here saying OK so they're good/promising but OMG... certainly not overly so. What a silly notion.

It is this "hold your horses there... don't be so naive" message I'm getting that worries me... if I'm right... but obviously doesn't seem to be that crucial to others... so its maybe beginning to look like I"m wrong.

Not at odds at all with anyone who disagrees with my assessment that OK is something really special. What do I know? Seriously... it's just my observation.

If I'm wrong about his being exceptional... then obviously it is less critical that we protect him or for that matter do anything different than what is currently being done.

It's just that even after all the pummeling I've been getting... I'm still not sure I'm persuaded... and the fact that I tend to worry about things over which I have absolutely no control... is not helping.

You can’t compare Kylington and Valimaki. Valimaki is in his 1st pro year and Kylington his 4th with 187 games of AHL experience.

I really hope there is a way to load up at the TDL and be able to keep all of Kylington, Andersson and Valimaki.

I think all 3, as well as Hanifin, should be part of the long term plans.

For next year's Left Defense spots: Gio, Kylington and Valimaki.... or Gio, Valimaki and Kylington

For next year's Right Defense spots: Anderson; TBD, TBD.

Exactly! What a great position to be in! They could all come back and that would be great... or... whatever happens... I'd just rather see them being "at risk" than the others for next year at least.

Age mainly... contract, CAP and market value right now are my main "additional considerations". But if I had to protect defense men... those are my picks. Not about individual talent so much as "all things considered".

I think Valimaki will be the better all around player - more of a Gio to Kylington’s Brodie but Kylington may be better offensively than Brodie if he pans out.

You would protect Gio on his last legs over Hanifin? Umm

Hanifin just turned 22 and has 28 points in 58 games...
Hamonic brings a edge and nastiness to the defense and is currently lacking that kind of player.
Brodie has 29 points in 58 games and is on the top pairing with Giordano...

not a rocket scientist, but i am willing to bet all those players are back next year... Brodie is the only one i could see being moved due to his contract coming up next season...but it would have to be part of a major deal

I think his influence on these young guys is a major reason I'm going out on a limb with them. Precarious for sure but the pay off would be huge if we could get these three guys signed with Gio as their mentor/papa. Has to be good.

Actually you're not going out on any limb. You're opining on a forum. Treliving, when he makes a decision, will be going out on a limb.

You're here trying desperately to convince people of what? Almost all think he's a great d-man who has a high ceiling and is progressing very well. You? You're worried for some reason that he's not considered ultra elite already.

I being unfair to Hanifin but I'm having to choose my 3 left D. He's a better value for the Flames as trade equity right now and not "obviously better than the other two going forward". He may very well prove to be just that but I'd certainly go with Kylington right now (trade deadline thinking) over him if I had to. I'd like to keep them both however... don't get me wrong. Hanifin is just not as "sharp" about what is happening around him as Kylington. IMO

And Kylington was a project, Valimaki was considered close to NHL-ready, even from a physical standpoint never mind experience.

You're also underselling the fact that in the 17/18/19 seasons there was a huge difference in the kind of ice time they were getting. Valimaki was playing 30+ minutes a night in all situations, even if it was against kids, because that's what happens in junior. Kylington was getting limited minutes, first in the SHL his draft year and then even in the AHL where he was playing behind Kulak and Wotherspoon who the organization did everything to give them a chance to make it.

Even 20 year old Kylington had to watch as Wotherspoon got to play the big top pair minutes with Andersson for no explainable reason.

21yo Kylington has 33 NHL GP and 20yo Valimaki has 22 NHL GP. The route they took to get there doesn't really matter at this point. Both have a lot of improving left in them.

I have no idea who will be better. All I know is that if Killington keeps progressing and stays healthy, I'm all for him staying up and Valamaki playing in the AHL all year. Let that contract slide and see what Killington can do!

It won't. He already played 22 games in the NHL this year and the criteria for his contract slidings was playing less than 10 NHL games:

https://flamesnation.ca/2018/07/24/j...s-this-season/

Quote:
If Valimaki spends all year, or most of it, in the American League, he’ll qualify for an entry-level slide thanks to meeting the following conditions:

- Birthdate between Sept. 15 and Dec. 31
- Sign entry level contract prior to Dec. 31 of draft year
- Play fewer than 10 NHL games in each of the two seasons following signing entry-level contract
https://flamesnation.ca/2018/10/24/j...hursday-night/

Quote:
In other words, his first contract would run from 2019-20 to 2022-23 if he didn’t play 10 NHL games, with this year being a “free” contract year in the minors.

Fortunately (and unfortunately) for the Flames, Valimaki’s been a reliable presence on the blueline to the point where they’re giving up their contractual flexibility by keeping him in the NHL past the 10-game mark. If he’s on the roster past the Flames’ 40th game of the season – whether he plays in all 40 games or not – he’ll also accrue a year of service for unrestricted free agency purposes.

I think we just take it as a positive as he seems pretty awesome! Will be interesting to see who is on the team in 3 years!

Thanks for laying that out. Definitely was not aware it was just 10 games. For some reason I thought it was 40 :/
