Do it Brad. We can’t run into the playoffs with Mangiapane as our #12.

That's the way it'll be in the playoffs though.

Does this game give Brad some reasons to try and get a "heavier" player? If there's one out there.

Learning experience for this team. Yes you're not a soft team, but you can't play a heavy game like the Caps. Have to play the way that you've had success.

The penalty on Backlund will get called more often than it doesn't. It just adds insult to a game that had awful officiating.

Hopefully Hamonic isn't gone for too long.
This is a good take.

Learn and move on.

I think I need to get this one out of my system pretty quickly. Still enraged at the cheap shots after the whistle. I guess that’s why they’re reigning Stanley Cup champions.

That was Bennett's game to step up in the third and lay someone out.

I also think people are extra amped up because of the break. We just better win that Cane's game.

The deciding factors tonight are clear.

1. Mike Smith was overwhelmingly the 2nd best goalie in tonight's game.
2. Officiating was predictably awful.

The Flames came out on fire with the top line buzzing...and then Smith put them in a hole and momentum swung to the Capitals.

The officials effectively killed the 2nd period for the Flames, but the Flames PK held strong...and then Smith allowed a shot from Wilson to get past him that had no business going in.

Flames work hard, tie the game and lose on a late goal against. It was a good shot, but Smith's goaltending style is fundamentally flawed. He sits deep in his net and never challenges shooters.

yes Tkachuk gave it away but it's not like Smith was unprepared. He saw Wilson clear as day with the shot and it wasnt a really hard one but one that eluded Smith on his right

That one was definitely all on Smith

Man, Backstrom is a turd. Brutal dive to put his team ahead and the hit like 10 minutes after the buzzer on unsuspecting Gaudreau, real brave. And wow now I can see why Wilson is sort of the #1 anal bead in the league right now.

Also please use another goalie. Call up ANYONE.

Ugh, that would be an enormous mistake. Ferland will easily cost a first and more, and to get him just to bump Mangiapane out of the lineup? An acquisition like Ferland needs to have a definable role past being a Mangiapane replacement. As it stands, the top line and the 3M line are fantastic at everything.

The Flames need an infusion of grit into their bottom-six. Getting Ferland will not help! Outside of one playoff series, he seldom worked here in a bottom-six role. Especially given the optics of re-acquiring him, Don Waddell will not allow the Flames any breaks in negotiating a Ferland trade. The Flames would be much better off going for a less sentimental acquisition who has a lower profile.

Need Bennett and Neal to turn up the grease once the games actually start to matter.

He's not known as James Kneeal for nothing

Meh game with a ####ty ending, would have been great to steal a point

They should be calling the idiots who officiated this game to give them their pink slips.

So we lose one of our top four defenseman because of a mystery non-call. Then we lose a game because of a mystery call with two minutes left. Pair that with letting their atrocious fourth-line score two goals on us, and the "always good for one" Smith softie on Wilson's goal, and there's the game. I hope they start calling these refs out, this is getting ridiculous!

Lots of talk about how the refs/Smith lost us the game. Very few posts giving credit to the defending champion Caps. Don't forget there's 21 guys on the other side who are the best in the world at their job playing for a win.

Caps snapped a 7 game losing streak. They were desperate for a win and came fired up against the best team in the West. Tons of credit being given to the Flames on the other broadcast. I'm not surprised the Caps came to play. Kuznetsov had a dominating game. Caps broadcast is saying it was his best game of the season. Caps won most of the little board battles, and are overall much more physical then the Flames. Dmitri Jaskin had a great game.

Was hoping for at least a point, especially after a long break. Unfortunately there's going to be losses like this one. But at least it wasn't to a Western team.

I agree Smith should have had that. But I think Tkachuk actually screened the shot release with his desperate attempt to stretch his leg and block it. From bad to worse from Tkachuk, but Smith probably wants that back still.

Hear a lot of complaining about the refs and Backstrom...

But Flames lost the toughness battle tonight.
And Smith remains shaky.

Good "playoff" type test we haven't seen in a while. Hard because of the break but they were also missing Ovechkin.

We were just off a week, but these things were evident before. Treliving clearly needs to make some moves prior to the deadline. Address goaltending and hits/toughness or the playoffs might just eat us up.

PS that was definitely a penalty on Backlund at the end. And the hit on Gaudreau albeit stupid wasn't as hard as people are saying.

Ferland's starting to have concussion problems and has already stated how his game needs to adjust to remain healthy and productive. I don't think we'll see him be that 2015 player ever again to be honest. He might still end up being a very good NHL player, just not that same type.

I don't know who's available that might be a good fit, but I don't think Ferland is, especially at his pricetag. But agreed that a guy like Neal needs to be showing his greasy side more often, especially if he can't put the puck in.

Neal is looking better and better. Hopefully his game is tuned up by the time the post season starts up.
